1) Is the NGP 9200 gap solution UL certified for fire doors, and what rating does it cover?
It is a UL certified miscellaneous fire door accessory for use on 20- and 45-minute rated fire doors tested to UL10B and UL10C. It works on both wood and hollow metal doors. That covers the majority of corridor, stairwell and tenant separation doors in commercial and multi-family buildings.
2) Do I need anything else besides the NGP 9200 seal to finish the job on the latch side?
Yes, on the latch side you also need an NGP Strike Shim, either the 9275 or the 9225. Because the gap solution builds material out from the frame, the latchbolt no longer reaches the strike properly, and the shim restores correct latchbolt engagement. Order the shim with the seal or the door will not latch as it should.
3) Can this seal be used on a 90-minute rated door?
No. The NGP gap solution is certified for 20- and 45-minute rated UL10B and UL10C assemblies only. On a 90-minute stairwell or shaft door you need a product certified to that rating, so do not substitute this one there. Applying an accessory outside its certification is the kind of thing an AHJ inspector writes up.
4) How does an intumescent gap seal actually close the clearance in a fire?
At normal room temperature the seal sits flat, only 3/32 inch tall, so it does not interfere with door operation. NGP intumescent material activates at 275 F and expands up to 20 times its original thickness, filling the clearance between door and frame and blocking smoke and flame passage for the duration of the rating. It is a passive part: nothing to power, nothing to adjust.
5) How is the NGP gap solution attached, and does it need screws or drilling into the frame?
No fasteners and no drilling. It mounts with a modified acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive backed by a release liner: peel and press. The adhesive gives high initial grab and long-term holding, so this is a permanent mounting, not a temporary tape. That makes it a practical retrofit on an existing labeled door where you do not want to put new holes in the frame.
6) Will an intumescent gap seal hold up on an exterior door or in an unheated stairwell?
The adhesive is rated for end use from -30 F to 250 F for long-term exposure, interior or exterior, and the material resists aging, weathering, UV, water, detergent, alcohol and chemical exposure. That covers unconditioned stairwells, parking structures and exterior-facing rated openings. Note the activation point is 275 F, above the service ceiling, so normal heat will not set it off.
7) What finish does the NGP 9200DKB gap solution come in, and will it look right against a bronze frame?
The 9200DKB is supplied in Dark Bronze. Against dark anodized or bronze-painted hollow metal frames it reads as a shadow line rather than a stripe, which matters when the seal is going on tenant-facing corridor doors in an occupied building. It is a single finish on this model.
