1) Will the NGP GAP90 work on my frame, or does the stop have to be a certain width?
Frame stop width is the thing to measure first. The GAP90 is made for openings where the door frame stop is less than 1-3/8 inches wide, and the part itself is 1-3/8 inches wide. If your stop is already 1-3/8 inches or wider, this is not the right piece for that opening.
2) Is the NGP GAP90 actually approved by code, or is it just a filler strip?
It is a listed product, not a filler. The GAP90 is UL certified to ANSI/UL10C and CAN/ULC-S104, and complies with IBC, NFPA 80 and NFPA 252 for use in the US and Canada. NFPA 80 is the standard your fire door inspector is citing when they write up an excessive clearance, so this is the paperwork an AHJ or an institutional compliance file needs.
3) After installing the GAP90 the latch does not reach the strike. What do I need?
Building up the jamb can pull the strike out of reach of the latchbolt. NGP makes Strike Shims for that, the 9275 or 9225, and they are used with the GAP90 where the latchbolt needs to re-engage. Order them alongside the gap solution on any opening where the jamb side is being built out.
4) Can I use the GAP90 on a 3-hour rated fire door?
No. The GAP90 tops out at 90 minutes. Its certification covers 60- and 90-minute doors with clearances up to 3/8 inch, and 20- and 45-minute doors up to 9/16 inch. A 3-hour opening is outside what this part is certified for, so an oversize gap there has to be corrected another way.
5) What lengths does the GAP90 gap solution come in, and how do I figure out what to order for a head and jamb?
Four lengths: 36, 48, 84 and 96 inches. The short ones cover the head of a standard opening and the long ones run the jamb, so a single door usually takes one head piece plus jamb pieces cut to the door height. The GAP90 is applied at the head and jambs, not the sill.
6) Does the NGP GAP90 need to be ordered handed, left or right?
No handing to specify. The GAP90 is a non-handed design, so the same part goes on a left-hand or right-hand opening. For a property manager or a facility stocking spares across a building, that means one part number covers every door instead of two.
7) Will the GAP90 hold back smoke, or only flame?
Both jobs. Beyond maintaining fire door integrity, the GAP90 restricts the passage of smoke through the head and jamb clearance. On a healthcare or multi-family corridor where the smoke barrier matters as much as the fire rating, that is the reason to close the gap with a certified part rather than patching the frame.
8) What colors does the NGP GAP90 come in for a finished corridor?
Gray and Dark Bronze, both offered in 36, 84 and 96 inch lengths. Dark bronze reads better against a bronze or dark-painted frame in a lobby or tenant corridor; gray disappears on a standard primed or painted hollow metal frame.
9) Is the NGP GAP90 meant for commercial openings or will it work on a residential door?
This is a commercial product, aimed at rated openings in offices, schools, hospitals, industrial plants, government buildings and multi-tenant residential.
