1) What do the two ends on the Nibco 0707-2-4 elbow actually connect to?
It's a Ftg x M elbow: one end is a fitting (street) solder end that slips inside a copper fitting socket, the other is a male NPT thread that screws into a female threaded port. So it turns the line 90 degrees and converts from solder to thread in one part. Pipe size is 1/2 inch.
2) Can I use this Nibco bronze street elbow on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states use of this fitting in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It's cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400, which is not a lead-free potable alloy. Keep it to non-potable service such as HVAC, heating, fire protection, irrigation, or industrial piping, and use a lead-free brass or wrought copper adapter where the line is potable.
3) What systems is the Nibco 0707 series 90-degree elbow rated for?
Nibco lists it for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing. The drinking water restriction still applies, so on the plumbing side treat it as a non-potable fitting.
4) Is this elbow a full 90 or a short-radius bend, and is it a reducing elbow?
Full 90 degrees, which the trade calls a quarter bend, and it's straight size, so both ends are 1/2 inch. There's no size change through the fitting.
5) Will a cast bronze fitting hold up in hot or aggressive water compared to wrought copper?
The 0707 elbow is cast bronze and dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters in systems where zinc leaching attacks ordinary brass. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18, the same standard Nibco builds its cast solder pressure fittings to.
6) Do I need dope or tape on the threaded side of this Nibco elbow?
The male end is NPT, a tapered pipe thread, so it needs a thread sealant or PTFE tape to seal. Solder the fitting end first and let it cool before making up the threaded joint so you're not heating the sealant.
