1) What do the ears on the Nibco 0707-3-5 drop elbow do?
The mounting ears let you fasten the elbow directly to a wall support or backing board with a nail or screw, so the stub-out stays put while the shower arm, hose bibb or faucet supply is threaded in. That's the whole point of a drop-ear fitting versus a plain 90: it anchors the transition point instead of leaving it hanging on the tubing.
2) What kind of connections are on each end of this Nibco drop ear elbow?
It's a C x F fitting: one end is a solder cup that slips over copper tube, the other is female NPT thread. So you sweat the copper side and thread a male NPT nipple, shower arm or valve into the other. Bend is a full 90 degrees (1/4 bend).
3) Can I use this bronze drop ear elbow on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states that use of this fitting in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It's cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, which does not meet the current low-lead potable requirement. Use it on non-potable work only, and pick a lead-free drop ear elbow for any domestic water stub-out.
4) What systems is this Nibco C x F drop elbow rated for?
Nibco lists it for commercial plumbing, residential plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service. Given the drinking water restriction on the C84400 bronze, the practical uses are the non-potable ones: hydronic heating drops, HVAC, irrigation and industrial piping.
5) Is this drop ear elbow cast bronze or wrought copper, and does it matter?
Cast bronze, per ASTM B584 alloy C84400, with material and workmanship to ASME B16.18. Cast bodies are what you get on drop-ear fittings because the ears have to be part of the casting. It's also dezincification resistant, which matters on irrigation and other lines with aggressive water chemistry.
6) Do I need a 3/8 x 1/2 or a 3/4 x 1/2 drop ear elbow for my run?
Match the solder cup to the copper tube you're running and the thread to what screws in. The 3/8 x 1/2 (B066800) suits a small branch feeding a 1/2 inch NPT connection; the 3/4 x 1/2 (B067050) takes a 3/4 inch copper branch down to the same 1/2 inch female thread. Both land on 1/2 inch NPT, so the only decision is the tube size on the sweat side.
7) How do I solder a drop ear elbow without wrecking the threads or the wall backing?
Sweat the copper side before you thread anything into the NPT port and before you screw the ears down, or at minimum keep the flame off the threaded boss. The fitting is cast bronze, which holds heat longer than a wrought fitting, so let it cool before you thread in the nipple.
