The 90-degree elbow features solder cups and mounting ears. The fitting provides a means of changing the pipeline direction 90 degrees. The ears allow the fitting to be secured to a wall support using a nail or screw. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Nibco B073550 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Nibco 707-5 drop ear elbow connect to on each end?
Both ends of the Nibco 707-5 are solder cups, C x C, so you sweat it directly onto copper tube on both the incoming and outgoing side. There is no threaded end on this fitting, and it turns the line 90 degrees (1/4 bend).
2) What size copper pipe does the Nibco 707-5 drop elbow come in?
Two sizes, 1/2 inch (MPN B073550) and 3/4 inch (MPN B073600). Both are straight size, meaning the two cups match each other, so you are not stepping pipe size through the elbow.
3) Can I use a Nibco 707-5 drop ear elbow for a potable water line?
No. The 707-5 is cast bronze to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. For a shower arm, lav stub-out, or any potable line, you need a lead-free drop ear elbow instead. The 707-5 belongs on non-potable work.
4) Do I need a different fitting if my stub-out has to accept a threaded nipple?
Yes. The Nibco 707-5 is C x C, both ends solder, so nothing threads into it. If the outlet needs to take a threaded arm or nipple, order a drop ear elbow with an FIP outlet (C x F) in your pipe size instead.
5) What are the ears on a drop ear elbow for, and do I need to use them?
The two ears are drilled so the fitting can be fastened to blocking or a wall support with a nail or screw. That anchors the turn so the pipe stub coming out of the wall does not move when something is threaded onto it or pulled on. You don't have to fasten them, but the whole reason to pick a drop ear over a plain 90 is that rigid backing.
6) Should I use a drop ear elbow or a standard copper 90 elbow?
Use a plain 90 anywhere the turn is in open pipe and supported by hangers. Use the drop ear, like the Nibco 707-5, where the elbow terminates at a wall and the outlet has to stay put, since its mounting ears screw to the framing or support behind the finish. Same 90 degree turn, same solder cups, the difference is the anchoring.
7) Is the Nibco 707-5 elbow made to a recognized fitting standard?
Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.18, and the casting is ASTM B584 Alloy C84400 bronze. It is also dezincification resistant, which matters on buried or aggressive-water lines where brass alloys can leach zinc and fail.
8) What systems is the Nibco 707-5 bronze drop elbow rated for?
It is listed for commercial plumbing, residential plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service. Keep in mind the drinking water restriction on this cast bronze alloy, so on the plumbing side it is for non-potable lines.
