1) Can I use the Nibco 707 reducing elbow on potable water lines?
No. The Nibco 707 is a cast bronze fitting in ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and its use in U.S. drinking water applications has been prohibited since January 3, 2014. Keep it to non-potable service: heating, HVAC hydronics, fire protection, industrial and irrigation piping. For potable domestic water you need a lead-free wrought copper or lead-free bronze fitting instead.
2) What size reductions does the Nibco 707 90-degree elbow come in?
Thirteen reducing combinations, all solder cup by solder cup: 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 3/4, 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1, 2 x 3/4, 2-1/2 x 2, 3 x 2-1/2, 3 x 2, and 4 x 3 inches. Every one of them changes direction and size in a single fitting, so you don't need a separate coupling reducer.
3) I need a 2 inch line to drop to 3/4 inch and turn 90 degrees. Is there one fitting for that?
Yes, part B056600 is the 2 inch by 3/4 inch reducing 90. It does the turn and the reduction in one solder joint instead of an elbow plus a bushing, which saves you a joint and a few inches of takeout in a tight chase. The larger cup takes the 2 inch tube, the smaller takes the 3/4 inch.
4) What does C x C mean on this elbow, and does it accept copper tube directly?
C x C means both openings are solder cups sized to slip over the outside of copper tube, so the tube goes into the fitting on both ends. No threads, no adapters. You clean, flux, assemble and solder or braze the joint. Neither end is female pipe thread, so if you're tying into threaded pipe you'll need a separate adapter.
5) What is a close rough elbow and when should I not use one?
Close rough means a short-radius 90-degree bend (a 1/4 bend) with an as-cast interior rather than a smooth long sweep. That short radius adds turbulence and pressure drop, so the 707 is meant for runs where velocity isn't a concern. On high-velocity lines, pump discharge, or anywhere you're fighting noise and erosion, use a long-radius or sweep elbow instead.
6) Is the Nibco 707 elbow cast bronze or wrought copper, and does that matter?
Cast bronze, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, not wrought copper. Practical difference: cast bodies are heavier walled and are how you get odd reducing combinations that wrought fittings often don't offer. They also solder a little slower because there's more mass to bring up to temperature. The fitting is dezincification resistant, which matters on closed-loop and treated-water systems.
7) Does the Nibco 707 meet ASME B16.18 for solder joint fittings?
Material and workmanship on the 707 are per ASME B16.18, the standard covering cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. That's the spec most commercial mechanical drawings call out for cast solder fittings, so it will satisfy a B16.18 callout on the submittal. It is also made in an ISO 9001 certified facility.
8) Can I use this bronze elbow on a fire sprinkler or hydronic heating line?
Yes on both. The 707 is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service, along with residential plumbing. Since it's a cast bronze fitting that cannot go in U.S. potable water, fire protection and hydronic heating are exactly where it belongs.
