The 90-degree union elbow features solder cups and a union connection. The fitting provides a means of changing the pipeline direction 90 degrees. The union connection allows for the line to be repaired without damage. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. Nibco B074650 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 707-6 union elbow come in?
The 707-6 90-degree union elbow is offered in four copper tube sizes: 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch. Part numbers run B074500 (3/8"), B074550 (1/2"), B074600 (3/4") and B074650 (1"). Both ends are solder cups (C x C), so the size given is the copper tube size the cups accept, not a thread size.
2) Can I use this Nibco 707-6 bronze union elbow on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states that use of the 707-6 in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is an ASTM B584 Alloy C84400 bronze casting, so it belongs on non-potable service: hydronic heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and fire protection piping. For domestic water you need a lead-free rated fitting instead.
3) Why use a union elbow instead of a plain 90-degree copper elbow?
A standard 90 is soldered solid on both sides, so servicing anything downstream means cutting the line. The 707-6 builds a union into the turn: the ground joint separates so a valve, pump or run of pipe can be broken out and put back without damaging the piping. Use it where you expect to disconnect, and use a plain wrought or cast 90 where the joint is permanent.
4) Is the Nibco 707-6 union elbow soldered or threaded onto the pipe?
Soldered. Both connections to the copper tube are solder cups (C x C), so the fitting sweats onto Type K, L or M copper the same way any solder pressure fitting does. The threaded part is internal, the union nut that pulls the two halves of the elbow together. You do not thread it to the pipe.
5) Will the 707-6 union elbow hold up on a closed-loop heating system with aggressive water?
It is a dezincification resistant bronze casting, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, which is what you want where water chemistry attacks ordinary brass. Nibco lists it for heating, HVAC and industrial service along with commercial piping and irrigation.
6) Do I need to take the union elbow apart before soldering it?
Yes, break the union and solder the two halves separately. The seat and the nut sit right at the joint, and heating the assembled fitting risks the ground seat. Reassemble once the cups have cooled. Nibco's copper fittings installation instructions cover the sweating procedure.
7) Does this elbow meet ASME B16.18 for solder joint fittings?
Material and workmanship on the 707-6 are per ASME B16.18, the standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. The castings are produced in an ISO 9001 certified facility.
