1) Is the Nibco 707-LF elbow a reducing elbow, and what sizes does it come in?
Yes, the 707-LF is a reducing 90-degree elbow, so the two ends are different sizes. It comes as 1-1/4 inch by 3/4 inch (MPN B05605L) and 1-1/2 inch by 1 inch (MPN B05625L). Both ends are solder cups, so you are stepping the line down and turning it in one fitting rather than using a separate coupling and reducer.
2) Does the 707-LF elbow solder onto copper tube, or is it threaded?
Both ends are solder cups, C x C, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. There is no thread on this fitting. If you need to transition to a threaded valve or appliance connection, you will need a separate adapter downstream.
3) Is the Nibco 707-LF elbow lead-free and approved for potable water?
It is a lead-free Silicon Performance Bronze alloy fitting certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and 372, which are the potable water standards, so it is suitable for domestic water lines. It is also dezincification resistant, which matters on aggressive water supplies.
4) What is a close rough elbow and when should I not use one?
A close rough radius means a tight turn with a rougher interior than a long-radius or wrot fitting. That tight bend adds turbulence and pressure loss, so the 707-LF is intended for runs where velocity is not a concern. On high-velocity lines, recirculating hot water, or anywhere erosion-corrosion is a worry, use a long radius or sweep fitting instead.
5) Can I use the 707-LF elbow on hydronic heating and fire protection lines, not just domestic water?
Yes. The fitting is listed for commercial and residential plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, and irrigation service. It is a soldered copper pressure fitting, so the limiting factor on any of those systems is the solder alloy you choose and the system's temperature and pressure.
6) Does the Nibco 707-LF meet the ASME standard my spec calls out for cast copper alloy fittings?
The 707-LF is manufactured to ASME B16.18 design standards, the standard for cast copper alloy solder-joint pressure fittings. It is made in an ISO 9001 certified facility. If the drawing calls for B16.22 wrot fittings specifically, this cast bronze fitting is a different standard and will not satisfy that line item.
7) Which end of the reducing elbow is the larger cup?
On the 707-LF, the size is called out large end first: the 1-1/4 x 3/4 has a 1-1/4 inch cup and a 3/4 inch cup, and the 1-1/2 x 1 has a 1-1/2 inch cup and a 1 inch cup. Both are female solder cups that accept the outside of nominal copper tube, so measure your existing tube by nominal size, not by its actual OD.
