The 90-degree elbow features solder cups and mounting ears. The fitting provides a means of changing the pipeline direction 90 degrees. The ears allow the fitting to be secured to a wall support using a nail or screw. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco BF7355L – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a drop ear elbow used for on a copper water line?
A drop ear elbow like the Nibco 707-5-LF turns the line 90 degrees and gives you a place to anchor it. The cast ears take a nail or screw into a wall support or backer, so the fitting stays put when someone pulls on whatever is threaded into it. That is why it is the standard fitting behind a shower arm, a hose bibb, or a wall-mount faucet, where a plain elbow would let the stub rotate.
2) Is the Nibco 707-5-LF drop ear elbow solder or threaded on the outlet?
Both ends are solder cups. The connection is listed C x C, meaning copper tube size sweat on the inlet and the outlet, so you sweat copper into both sides. If you need a female threaded outlet to receive a shower arm or a hose bibb nipple, that is a different drop ear elbow (C x F, sometimes called a 707-LF-style threaded drop ear) and the C x C will not accept a threaded stub.
3) Is the Nibco 707-5-LF elbow lead free and approved for potable water?
Lead-free, and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water contact and lead content standards. The body is Silicon Performance Bronze alloy and it is dezincification resistant, so it holds up in aggressive water where a plain brass fitting can lose zinc and fail. Made to ASME B16.18 design standards.
4) Is this the right fitting for a shower arm or a hose bibb?
Only if the stub coming out of it is copper. The 707-5-LF is C x C, both ends sweat, so a shower arm or hose bibb with male pipe threads has nothing to thread into. For those you want the female threaded drop ear version. The C x C is the one to use when you are sweating a copper riser or stub out of the ear and terminating with a separate adapter or valve.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 707-5-LF drop ear elbow come in?
Two sizes, 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch copper tube size. The 1/2 inch is MPN BF7355L and the 3/4 inch is BF7360L. Size by the nominal tube you are running, not the outside diameter, since these are copper tube size solder cups.
6) Can I use a bronze drop ear elbow on a copper line, or does it have to be a copper fitting?
Bronze on copper is standard practice and this one is built for it. The Silicon Performance Bronze body has solder cups sized to copper tube and is made to ASME B16.18, the same design standard that governs wrought copper solder pressure fittings, so it sweats into a copper system exactly the way a copper elbow does. The reason to pick bronze here is the cast ears, which a wrought copper elbow does not have.
7) Will a dezincification resistant fitting hold up on well water or chloraminated municipal water?
That is what the alloy is for. Ordinary brass fittings can dealloy in aggressive water, losing zinc and going porous or splitting. The Silicon Performance Bronze body on this drop ear elbow is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters on well systems and treated municipal supply. For a property manager standardizing across a building, it also means one fitting spec works whatever the water is on each site.
8) Do I need to remove anything before soldering a drop ear elbow?
Nothing to disassemble here, the 707-5-LF is a solid cast fitting with no seat, gasket, or washer to burn out, so you can sweat both cups with the fitting already screwed to the backer. Fasten the ears first if you want the stub held on layout while the joint cools. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering joint prep and heating.
