1) What is a drop ear elbow for, and how is the Nibco 707-3-5-LF mounted?
A drop ear elbow is what you use to terminate a copper line at a wall for a fixture stub, like a shower arm, hose bibb, or washing machine box. The 707-3-5-LF turns the line 90 degrees and the two mounting ears let you nail or screw the fitting to blocking or a wall support behind the finished surface, so the threaded outlet stays put when someone cranks on the shower arm. Without the ears, a plain 90 leaves the stub floating.
2) What connections does the Nibco 707 drop ear elbow have, solder or threaded?
One of each. It's a C x F fitting: the inlet is a solder cup that sweats onto copper tube, and the outlet is female NPT thread. So you solder the copper side and thread the fixture side in, which is exactly the transition you want at a stub out where the fixture arm or nipple screws in later.
3) Will the Nibco 707 drop ear elbow fit standard copper tube and standard pipe thread?
Yes on both counts. The solder cup is made to ASME B16.18, the design standard for cast copper alloy solder pressure fittings, so it takes standard Type M, L or K copper tube of the marked size with a normal sweat joint. The outlet is female NPT, so any standard tapered pipe thread nipple, shower arm, or hose bibb threads straight in. No adapter needed on either end.
4) Should I use a bronze drop ear elbow or a wrought copper one for a shower arm stub?
Go bronze where the outlet gets torqued. This is a cast Silicon Performance Bronze body with female NPT thread, and the thicker cast section takes the wrenching a shower arm or hose bibb puts on the stub better than thin wrought copper. Wrought copper drop ears are lighter and cheaper to run, and they're fine for a low stress termination. For a fixture someone will hang a hand on, bronze is the safer termination.
5) Can I use the Nibco 707 drop ear elbow on a hydronic heating or fire protection line, or is it potable only?
Not potable only. Nibco lists this fitting for commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation service. It's a pressure solder fitting built to ASME B16.18, so the same part covers a boiler makeup stub, a hose bibb on the exterior wall, and an irrigation drop.
6) What's the difference between a 3/4 x 1/2 drop ear elbow and a plain 1/2 inch one?
The size on the copper side. The 3/4 x 1/2 has a 3/4 inch solder cup with a 1/2 inch female NPT outlet, so it lands directly on a 3/4 inch branch line and gives you a 1/2 inch fixture thread. The straight 1/2 inch version has a 1/2 inch cup and a 1/2 inch thread, so you'd need to reduce the copper upstream first. If you're stubbing a shower off a 3/4 inch riser, the reducing version saves a coupling and a piece of pipe.
7) Do I need to do anything different when soldering a bronze drop ear elbow that's already screwed to the framing?
Fasten it after you sweat it, or accept the heat sink. The cast bronze body plus the nail or screw into wood blocking pulls heat away and into combustibles, so the usual practice is to solder the cup on the bench or before the ears are fastened, let it cool, then secure it and thread in the fixture nipple with the ears carrying the load.
