Nibco BF7035L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a C x M copper elbow actually connect to on each end?
The Nibco 707-4-LF 90-degree elbow has one solder cup and one male NPT thread. The cup side slips over copper tube and gets soldered; the threaded side screws into a female NPT port, so the fitting both turns the line 90 degrees and takes you from sweat copper to a threaded connection in one part. If both ends of your run are copper tube, this is the wrong fitting, you want a straight C x C elbow instead.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 707-4-LF elbow come in, and what do the reducing sizes mean?
Seven size combinations. Straight sizes where the cup and the thread match: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4 and 2 inch. Two reducing combinations: 1/2 x 3/4 and 3/4 x 1/2. On a C x M fitting the first figure is the solder cup (the copper tube size) and the second is the male NPT thread, so a 1/2 x 3/4 takes 1/2 inch tube and threads into a 3/4 inch female port, and the 3/4 x 1/2 does the opposite. Pick by the tube you are sweating and the port you are threading into, not by one nominal size.
3) What is Performance Bronze and why not just use a brass or wrought copper elbow?
Performance Bronze is Nibco's silicon bronze alloy, and the reason to specify it over a yellow brass adapter is dezincification resistance. Brass fittings on aggressive or chlorinated water can lose zinc over time and fail at the threads. The silicon bronze alloy does not have that failure mode, which is why it shows up on potable water and recirculating hot water systems. Wrought copper is fine for cup-to-cup joints, but you cannot cut a durable male NPT thread on thin wrought copper, so the threaded leg of an adapter elbow is cast bronze by necessity.
4) Can you solder a C x M bronze elbow that is already threaded into a valve or a pump?
Do it the other way round. Sweat the cup end onto the tube first, let the joint cool, then thread the assembly into the valve or pump port. Torching a cast bronze elbow while it is made up to a valve pushes heat straight into the valve seat and seals, and any thread sealant or tape on the joint will cook. The thread on the 707-4-LF is a male NPT, so it is a tapered thread that seals on the thread itself with tape or pipe dope, not on a gasket.
5) I need to drop a 1/2 inch copper branch into a 3/4 inch threaded port. Which Nibco 707 do I order?
The 1/2 x 3/4 combination, MPN B07000L. The 1/2 inch solder cup takes your 1/2 inch copper tube and the 3/4 inch male NPT goes into the 3/4 inch female port, and the fitting makes the 90 degree turn at the same time, so you do not need a separate reducing bushing stacked on an elbow. If your situation is reversed, 3/4 inch tube into a 1/2 inch port, that is B07025L.
6) Is a solder pressure elbow OK on a DWV or drain line?
No. The 707-4-LF is a solder pressure fitting, built for pressurized supply piping, not the thinner wall DWV fitting system used on drain, waste and vent. DWV copper uses its own fittings and they are not interchangeable with pressure fittings. Use this one on hot and cold potable supply, and order DWV fittings for the drainage side.
7) Does a copper bronze fitting count toward a sustainable or green building project?
Copper's reusability is a large part of why it gets specified on sustainable projects, along with its durability and low maintenance in service, so a copper system is fully recyclable at end of life rather than landfilled. On the water quality side the 707-4-LF is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is what most green building and healthcare potable water requirements are looking for.
