The 90-degree union elbow features solder cups and a union connection. The fitting provides a means of changing the pipeline direction 90 degrees. The union connection allows for the line to be repaired without damage. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. Nibco B07455L – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 707-6-LF union elbow come in?
The 707-6-LF union elbow is made in 1/2 inch (MPN B07455L) and 3/4 inch (MPN B07460L) copper tube sizes. Both are straight size, meaning the same size on both ends, so there is no reducing version of this union elbow.
2) Is the Nibco 707-6-LF elbow soldered or threaded onto the pipe?
Both ends are solder cups (C x C), so the fitting sweats onto copper tube. The union nut in the middle is the threaded part, and that joint is made up by hand, not soldered. Solder the two cups to the tube first, then draw the union together.
3) Why use a union elbow instead of a plain 90-degree copper elbow?
A plain sweat 90 is permanent; to service the line past it you cut it out. The 707-6-LF puts a union at the turn, so the joint can be broken and remade for repairs or equipment swaps without damaging the line. Use it where you expect to disconnect: pump and water heater connections, valve or strainer takeouts, anything that comes apart for service. For a turn that never needs to come apart, a standard solder 90 is cheaper and one less leak path.
4) Can this union elbow be used on heating and HVAC lines, or is it potable water only?
Nibco lists the 707-6-LF for commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation service. So hydronic heating loops and chilled water lines are within its stated uses, not just domestic water.
5) Does a bronze union elbow work on copper tube, or do I need a copper fitting?
It solders to copper tube the same as a wrought copper fitting. The body is Silicon Performance Bronze, a cast alloy Nibco uses for lead-free potable fittings, and the cups are sized for standard copper tube in 1/2 and 3/4 inch. Use normal lead-free solder and flux; Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions for the joint procedure.
6) Do I need a gasket or washer for the union on the 707-6-LF?
No separate gasket is required. The union is a metal to metal seat drawn up by the nut, supplied assembled as one fitting. Take the nut off and slide it clear before you sweat the cups so the heat does not reach the seat, then reassemble and tighten.
