The 90-degree elbow features solder cups and mounting ears. The fitting provides a means of changing the pipeline direction 90 degrees. The ears allow the fitting to be secured to a wall support using a nail or screw. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. Nibco BF7400L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What makes the Nibco 707-5-A-LF a "Hy-Set" elbow instead of a plain 90-degree elbow?
The Hy-Set version carries mounting ears cast onto the fitting body. You nail or screw the ears to a wall stud or backing board so the elbow is held rigid at the stub-out, which is what you want behind a shower valve, hose bibb, or lav supply. A standard 90 has no ears and has to be supported some other way. Both are straight size C x C solder elbows otherwise.
2) What size copper tube does the Nibco 707 Hy-Set elbow fit, and is it threaded or soldered?
It is a solder-only fitting, C x C, meaning both ends are solder cups that slip over copper tube. No threads on either end. Sizes offered are 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch, straight size (both cups the same size, so it is not a reducing elbow). If you need a threaded outlet at the stub-out, this is the wrong fitting.
3) Does this Nibco elbow meet the fitting standard called out on my plumbing drawings?
The 707 Hy-Set elbow is built to ASME B16.18, the design standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. That is the spec normally cited for solder pressure fittings on commercial and institutional drawings, alongside the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 potable water listings it also carries.
4) I'm roughing in a shower arm and a hose bibb. Which part number do I order?
Match the tube size you are running. The 1/2 inch Hy-Set elbow is MPN BF7400L, and the 3/4 inch is B07415L. Shower arms and lavatory stub-outs are typically 1/2 inch; a hose bibb fed with 3/4 inch takes the larger one. Both are 90 degree (quarter bend) elbows with ears for fastening to the framing.
5) Can I use this Hy-Set elbow on a PEX or CPVC line?
No. Both ends are solder cups sized for copper tube and the joint is made with solder, so it will not connect to PEX or CPVC directly. You would need a transition fitting upstream to get back to copper before this elbow. On a copper system it solders in like any other pressure fitting, with the added ears for anchoring.
6) Will the ears on this elbow let me set the stub-out at the right depth without extra bracing?
That is what they are for. The ears fasten with a nail or screw to a wall support, which fixes the elbow's position and depth against the framing so the stub-out does not shift when the valve or trim is tightened later. Without a Hy-Set elbow you would be adding a drop-ear bracket or wood blocking to do the same job.
7) Is this fitting suitable for a LEED or sustainable-build spec?
It is a copper alloy fitting, and copper's reusability and recyclability is part of why it gets specified on sustainable projects. It is also lead-free and carries the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 potable water certifications, which is usually the paperwork a green-building or institutional submittal wants on a water fitting.
