1) Will a Nibco 4503 female adapter let me transition from PVC pipe to a threaded metal fitting?
That's exactly what it does. The 4503 is a socket by female NPT adapter: one end solvent cements onto Schedule 80 PVC pipe, the other end takes a male NPT thread. So you can run PVC out to a threaded valve, pump nipple, or metal male thread without cutting into the cemented run. Sizes run 1/4 inch through 4 inch.
2) Can I use a Schedule 80 PVC female adapter on hot water lines?
No. Maximum service temperature on the 4503 adapter is 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water and any heated process line above that. Pressure rating also drops as temperature climbs toward that ceiling. For cold water, chemical, irrigation and industrial process service it is in its element.
3) Is the Nibco 4503 PVC adapter approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is a lead-free application fitting, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable service. It also meets ASTM D2467, the standard for Schedule 80 PVC socket fittings, so it will match a Sch 80 spec on a drawing.
4) Can I use PVC Schedule 80 fittings on a compressed air line?
Don't. The 4503 adapter and PVC Schedule 80 fittings generally are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That applies to pressure testing too, so air-test the system and you are outside the manufacturer's instruction. Hydrostatic test with water instead. For compressed air, use a piping system rated for gas service.
5) How do I install a PVC female adapter without cracking it when I thread into it?
Two different joints on the one fitting. The socket end gets primer and solvent cement onto Sch 80 PVC pipe. The female NPT end is a tapered thread in plastic, so it takes thread sealant and hand tight plus a turn or two with a wrench, no more. Overtightening a male metal thread into a plastic female socket is what splits these. Cement the socket first and let it cure before you make up the thread.
6) What is the difference between a female adapter and a male adapter in PVC Sch 80?
It comes down to which half of the thread you need. The 4503 is the female half: socket on one side, female NPT on the other, so it receives a male thread. If the mating part has a female thread (a threaded port on a pump, a tapped valve), you want a male adapter instead, which presents male NPT. Both glue onto the pipe the same way. Sort out the sex of the fitting you are landing on before you order.
7) Is Sch 80 PVC strong enough for an industrial process or irrigation main?
PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long term hydrostatic strength of any of the major thermoplastics used for piping, and this Chemtrol line is rated for commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead-free service. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up on chemical and buried irrigation work where metal fails. Keep it under 140 degrees F and off gas service.
8) Is the Chemtrol CA04250 the same thing as a Nibco 4503 adapter?
Same fitting. Chemtrol is a NIBCO brand, and CA04250 is the manufacturer part number for the 1 inch 4503 female adapter. The description also gives universal part number 835 for the pattern. So a submittal calling out Chemtrol and one calling out Nibco 4503 are asking for the same part.
9) Will a dark grey Sch 80 PVC fitting match my existing white PVC pipe?
The 4503 adapter is dark grey, which is the normal color for Schedule 80 and is how it is told apart from white Schedule 40 on sight. It will still cement to PVC pipe of the same nominal size, but the grey against white is a visual mismatch and, more to the point, Sch 80 has thicker walls and a different pressure rating than Sch 40. If the run is Sch 40 and the spec allows it, the joint works; if you are matching appearance across a building, expect the grey to stand out.
