The dark grey PVC adapter union features a female socket and a female pipe thread connections. This fitting has an FKM fluorocarbon which is suited to most applications involving mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping. Chemtrol® PVC fittings are easy to install and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Chemtrol® premium line of plastic fittings is backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control fittings are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco CA20615 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Nibco 4533-3 PVC union connect to pipe on each side?
One side is a socket (solvent weld) hub and the other is a female NPT thread, so you solvent-cement PVC pipe into one end and thread a male-threaded pipe, valve, or pump nipple into the other. Nibco lists the end configuration as S x F (NPT). That makes it the fitting to use where a cemented PVC run has to meet a threaded piece of equipment and still come apart later.
2) Will the FKM O-ring in this Chemtrol union hold up to acids and chlorinated chemicals?
The seat seal is FKM fluoroelastomer, which Nibco lists as suited to most applications involving mineral acids, salt solutions, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum oils. That is the reason to pick this version over an EPDM-sealed union on a chemical feed or industrial process line. Check the specific chemical and concentration against Chemtrol's chemical resistance data before committing.
3) What is the maximum temperature for this PVC Schedule 80 union?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. Above that you are out of PVC territory and need CPVC or metal. Keep in mind that PVC pressure ratings de-rate as temperature climbs toward that limit, so a hot process line near 140F is not a good application for it.
4) Can I use this PVC union on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, hydrostatic test only. PVC fails catastrophically when it stores gas energy, so keep it on liquid service.
5) Is this Nibco union approved for potable water?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and Nibco flags it as lead-free, so it is acceptable on potable water systems as well as industrial and irrigation lines. It also carries ASTM F1970.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4533-3 female adapter union come in?
Seven sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch. Order by nominal pipe size to match your Schedule 80 run, for example CA20615 for 1 inch and CA20630 for 2 inch.
7) Why use a union here instead of a plain female adapter?
A female adapter cements permanently into the line. This union threads apart at the nut, so you can pull a pump, strainer, valve or meter out for service without cutting pipe and re-cementing. On any component you expect to remove, put the union next to it; on a straight run you never plan to break, the cheaper solid adapter is fine.
8) Is Schedule 80 PVC the right choice over Schedule 40 for this fitting?
This one is Schedule 80, the heavier wall with the higher pressure rating, and it is dark grey rather than the white of Sch 40. Nibco notes PVC Schedule 80 has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any major thermoplastic piping material. Use it where pressure, mechanical abuse or chemical duty matter. Sockets are sized to the same nominal pipe OD, so the socket end still takes standard PVC pipe of that size.
9) Do I need thread sealant on the threaded side of this adapter union?
The NPT side needs a sealant, PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread paste, since the seal there is on the threads. The union joint itself seals on the FKM elastomer seat, so no tape or dope belongs on the nut. Hand-tighten the union nut; do not wrench it down hard, and never over-torque plastic threads.
