Nibco CA20355 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 4533E PVC union thread onto my existing threaded pipe, or do I need to solvent weld it?
Threaded on both ends, female NPT to female NPT, so it screws onto male threaded pipe ends with no solvent cement involved. That is the F x F configuration. If your pipe run is plain socket ends, you'd need a socket union or male adapters to make the transition.
2) Can I use an EPDM seal union on a line carrying petroleum oils or strong acids?
No. The EPDM seal in this union handles abrasion, tearing and a wide range of chemicals well, but it is not recommended for petroleum oils or most strong acids. For those services you want a different elastomer, typically Viton, in the same union body style. Check the chemical resistance data for your specific fluid before you commit.
3) What is the temperature limit on a Schedule 80 PVC threaded union?
140 degrees F maximum service temperature. That rules it out for hot water service and for steam or condensate lines. PVC also loses pressure rating as temperature climbs toward that ceiling, so size your system for the actual operating temperature, not just the ambient one.
4) Is this PVC union approved for potable water?
The 4533E union is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also meets ASTM F1970. It is listed as lead-free. Those are the listings a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water fitting.
5) Can I pressure test a PVC union with compressed air?
Do not use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test with water only. Thermoplastic under gas pressure stores energy and fails violently, which is why the instruction is absolute rather than a caution.
6) Why put a union in a PVC line instead of just gluing the pipe together?
A union gives you a disconnect point you can break and remake without cutting pipe. Put one on each side of a pump, strainer, valve or meter and you can pull the equipment for service and set it back without re-piping. Because this one is threaded on both ends, it also comes apart with hand tools rather than a saw and cement pot.
7) Is Schedule 80 PVC worth it over Schedule 40 for an industrial or irrigation line?
Schedule 80 carries the thicker wall and the higher pressure rating, and PVC has the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. The tradeoff is a smaller inside diameter at the same nominal size, so on a long irrigation run you give up a little flow. For commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service, which is what this union is listed for, Schedule 80 is the usual call.
8) Do I need thread sealant on a PVC threaded union, and how tight should it go?
NPT threads on plastic seal on the thread, so use PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread sealant on the male pipe threads going into the union. Hand tight plus a small amount with a strap wrench is the limit; over-torquing a plastic female thread splits the socket. The union nut itself seals against the EPDM face and needs no sealant, just hand tightening.
9) Will a dark grey PVC union match the rest of my Schedule 80 piping?
Dark grey is the standard Schedule 80 PVC color, and this union is dark grey, so it matches conventional Sch 80 pipe and fittings on sight. White generally signals Schedule 40, which is a useful field check when someone has mixed materials in an existing run.
