Nibco CA11400 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco 4517-3 PVC cap thread onto a male pipe end, or does it glue on?
It threads on. The 4517-3 is a female NPT (FPT) cap, so it screws over a male-threaded pipe end or a male adapter. There is no socket to solvent weld. If your line ends in a plain pipe stub with no threads, you either need a threaded male adapter first or a socket-style slip cap instead.
2) Can I use this PVC cap to pressure test a line with compressed air?
No. Chemtrol PVC fittings are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic (water) testing only. Capping a line and blowing air on it is how plastic fittings fail explosively, so plan the test around liquid.
3) How hot can a Schedule 80 PVC threaded cap run before it is the wrong material?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That rules it out for hot water distribution, boiler makeup, steam condensate or any process line that swings above 140. For hot service you would be looking at CPVC or metal instead. PVC also loses pressure rating as temperature climbs toward that ceiling, so size the system accordingly.
4) Is this Nibco cap approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application. Those are the two listings a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water fitting. Listed system uses are commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead-free service.
5) Can I cap a future branch takeoff with this and open it back up later?
That is a common use for a threaded cap. Because the 4517-3 screws on rather than solvent welding, you can back it off later with a strap wrench and land your branch without cutting pipe. Use PTFE tape or a thread sealant rated for plastic, and hand tighten plus one to two turns. Do not overtorque, since overtightening a plastic female thread splits the cap.
6) Will this cap corrode on a chemical feed or irrigation line?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the main reason these show up on chemical feed, irrigation and industrial water. Chemical compatibility still depends on what is in the line, so check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide for the specific fluid before you commit on a process application. Material is polyvinyl chloride throughout.
7) Why is this PVC cap dark grey instead of white?
Dark grey is the standard color convention for Schedule 80 PVC, the same way white marks Schedule 40. The 4517-3 caps are dark grey, which is what a plan reviewer or a foreman on site uses to tell at a glance that the heavier-wall fitting went in where the spec called for it.
