Nibco CA10850 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 4517 PVC cap thread onto a male pipe thread, or does it have to be glued?
It is a solvent weld cap only. The 4517 has a female S socket end, so it slips over the outside of Schedule 80 PVC pipe and is cemented in place. There are no threads on it. If you need to cap a male-threaded nipple or a threaded valve outlet, you want a FIPT threaded cap instead, not this one.
2) Can I use this PVC cap on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water distribution and any steam or hot process line. It is fine for cold water, chemical, and irrigation service within that limit. Keep in mind PVC pressure ratings also fall off as temperature climbs toward that ceiling.
3) Is the Nibco 4517 cap approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings, and it is designated lead-free, which is what an inspector looks for on a potable system. It is also used in commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation work.
4) Can I pressure test a capped line with compressed air?
No. The instructions on this PVC fitting are explicit: do not use or test with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test with water only. A gas-charged PVC line that fails releases stored energy and the cap is often the point it lets go.
5) Will a Schedule 80 cap fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe?
Yes on the socket. Sch 40 and Sch 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the 4517 socket cap glues onto Sch 40 pipe of the same size. The difference is wall thickness and pressure rating: capping a Sch 40 system with a Sch 80 fitting is normal practice, but the system is still limited by the Sch 40 pipe. The cap itself is made to ASTM D2467, the Sch 80 socket fitting standard.
6) How do I tell this grey Nibco cap apart from a CPVC one on the shelf?
Color is the quick check. The 4517 is dark grey PVC; CPVC Schedule 80 fittings run tan or light grey. Grey means PVC here, and PVC needs PVC solvent cement, not CPVC cement. The 4517 is also referenced as universal part number 847.
7) What is the Nibco part number for a 2 inch PVC Schedule 80 socket cap?
CA11000 is the 2 inch. Adjacent sizes in the same 4517 run are CA10950 for 1-1/2 inch and CA11050 for 2-1/2 inch, so check the digits carefully when ordering, the numbers step in fifties.
8) Do I need anything besides the cap to close off a PVC line?
The cap ships alone. To install it you supply PVC primer and PVC solvent cement rated for the pipe size, plus an applicator. Nothing is threaded and no gasket or O-ring is involved, so the joint is only as good as the cement work. For a 4 or 6 inch socket, use the heavy-bodied cement made for large diameter.
9) Should I cap the end of a PVC run or use a plug?
A socket cap like the 4517 goes over the outside of the pipe, so use it when you are terminating a plain length of pipe. A plug goes inside a fitting socket or a threaded port, so use that when the opening you are closing is a tee branch, a coupling, or a valve outlet. Both are permanent once cemented; if you expect to reopen the line, leave a union or a threaded adapter behind the cap instead.
