Nibco CB09650 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5117 CPVC cap fit Schedule 40 CPVC pipe, or only Schedule 80?
The 5117 socket cap is a Schedule 80 CPVC fitting with a female socket end. Socket dimensions follow pipe OD, which is the same for Sch 40 and Sch 80 CPVC at a given nominal size, so the cap will slip over Sch 40 CPVC pipe of the matching size. The heavier Sch 80 wall is what carries the higher pressure rating, so on a Sch 40 system the pipe, not the cap, sets the limit.
2) Can I thread this CPVC cap onto a male pipe thread?
No. The 5117 is a socket (slip) cap only, meant to be solvent cemented over the plain end of CPVC pipe. If you need to close off a male NPT nipple or a threaded outlet, you need a threaded CPVC cap or plug instead, not this one.
3) Is this CPVC cap approved for potable drinking water?
It is lead-free and carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, the certifications that cover potable water system components. It is also made to ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC socket fittings.
4) Can I use this cap to pressure test a line with compressed air?
No. Chemtrol CPVC fittings are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only. Gas testing a thermoplastic system risks brittle failure and is outside what these fittings are rated for.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5117 CPVC socket cap come in?
Eleven sizes, from 1/4 inch up through 6 inch: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4 and 6 inch. Order by size using the part number, for example CB09650 for 1 inch and CB09950 for 4 inch.
6) What temperature can a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 cap handle?
Maximum service temperature is 210 F. That is what makes CPVC the usual choice over PVC for hot water and heated process lines; pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so size the system to the manufacturer's temperature derating data.
7) Will this light grey CPVC cap match my existing Schedule 80 piping, or is my system the dark grey PVC?
Corzan CPVC is light grey; Schedule 80 PVC is normally dark grey. If your existing pipe is dark grey it is almost certainly PVC, and PVC and CPVC use different solvent cements and have different temperature limits. Match material first, not just size.
8) Do I need anything else besides the cap to make the joint?
Yes. The cap ships bare, with no cement. You need CPVC primer and CPVC solvent cement rated for the pipe size, plus a deburring tool and rag. Do not substitute PVC cement. Threading and flanging are the other Chemtrol connection methods, but this cap is solvent socket only.
9) What kind of systems is the Nibco 5117 CPVC cap used on?
Commercial plumbing, industrial process piping, irrigation, and lead-free potable applications. Typical use is capping a stubbed line, a future branch takeoff, or the end of a run during phased work. Because CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, it holds up on chemical and wet-location lines where metal caps would not.
