Nibco CB03950 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the maximum temperature a Nibco 5106 Corzan CPVC elbow can run at?
210 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. That is the headline reason to choose CPVC over PVC on a hot line, and it covers commercial domestic hot water and most industrial process work. Pressure rating drops as temperature climbs, so size the system to the CPVC de-rating curve rather than assuming full cold-water pressure at 210.
2) Is the Nibco 5106 CPVC elbow approved for potable drinking water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is classed as a lead-free application, so it is suitable for potable water systems. Those are the two listings a plumbing inspector looks for on a commercial potable line. Listed system uses are commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation, and lead-free service.
3) Can I pressure test a CPVC Schedule 80 system with compressed air?
No. Do not use or test the 5106 elbow, or any CPVC line it is in, with compressed air or other gases. Thermoplastic fittings under stored gas pressure can fail without warning. Hydrostatic testing with water is the accepted method. This also rules the fitting out for compressed air distribution service entirely.
4) Should I use a 45-degree elbow or a 90 for offsetting a CPVC line around an obstruction?
Two 45s beat a single 90 when you want to shift a run sideways and keep it flowing. The 5106 turns the line 45 degrees (a 1/8 bend), so a pair of them creates a swing offset with far less turbulence and pressure loss than stacking 90s, and it is the standard way to jog around a beam or another trade's pipe. Use a 90 when you need a hard corner at a wall or a riser takeoff. Both ends are sockets, so the 45 drops into the middle of a run with short nipples of pipe between.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5106 CPVC 45-degree elbow come in?
Twelve sizes: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. Common order numbers include CB03850 for 1/2 inch, CB03950 for 1 inch, CB04100 for 2 inch and CB04250 for 4 inch. Every one is a straight size elbow, so both sockets are the same size; a size change needs a separate reducer or bushing.
6) Does the Nibco 5106 elbow meet ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC fittings?
ASTM F439 is the standard it is built to, which is the socket-type Schedule 80 CPVC fitting spec engineers call out on submittals. If the drawing reads Schedule 80 CPVC socket fittings per ASTM F439, this elbow answers that line. Pipe schedule is 80.
7) Do I need anything besides the elbow to make up a CPVC Schedule 80 joint?
The fitting itself is all that ships, so plan on CPVC primer and CPVC solvent cement for each socket joint, plus an applicator sized to the socket. Chemtrol CPVC fittings join by solvent cementing, threading or flanging; this 5106 is the solvent cement version with female sockets on both ends. No gaskets, no threads, no tools beyond a cutter, deburring tool and cement.
8) Will a Corzan CPVC elbow match my existing grey CPVC piping, and how do I tell it apart from PVC on the job?
Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is light grey, the same colour family as the rest of the Schedule 80 CPVC system, so it blends into an existing grey run. Schedule 80 PVC is typically dark grey and Schedule 40 PVC is white, which is the quick field check before you cement. Confirm by the printed markings on the pipe rather than colour alone, since colour conventions vary by manufacturer.
9) Is CPVC Schedule 80 elbow suitable for an underground irrigation main?
Irrigation is a listed system use, along with commercial plumbing and industrial service, and Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is called out for underground performance. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the reason it holds up buried and in chemical service where metal fittings give out. Check a chemical resistance guide for the specific fluid before committing on a process line.
