Nibco CB05450 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5107 CPVC Schedule 80 90-degree elbow come in?
The 5107 socket elbow runs from 1/4 inch up to 8 inch: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. It is a straight-size elbow, so both sockets are the same size, there is no reducing version. Each size has its own part number, for example CB05350 for 1/2 inch, CB05600 for 2 inch and CB05750 for 4 inch.
2) Is the Nibco 5107 elbow solvent weld or threaded?
Solvent weld. Both ends are female sockets (S x S), so the pipe goes into the fitting and you cement it with CPVC primer and solvent cement. There are no threads on either end. If your line lands on a threaded connection or a valve with NPT ports, you need a threaded or transition fitting instead of this one.
3) How hot can this Corzan CPVC elbow run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That covers commercial hot water distribution and most industrial process lines within the pressure limits of the system. Note that CPVC pressure capacity falls off as temperature climbs, so a line running near 210F carries far less pressure than the same line at ambient.
4) Can I use this CPVC elbow on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that the 5107 must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only, with water. This is a liquid-service fitting for commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation.
5) Is the Nibco 5107 CPVC elbow approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is classified lead-free, which is what a potable water spec asks for. It also meets ASTM F439, the standard for Schedule 80 CPVC socket-type fittings.
6) Will a CPVC Schedule 80 elbow fit Schedule 40 CPVC pipe?
Yes on the socket, because Schedule 80 and Schedule 40 CPVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the 5107 socket accepts either. The difference is wall thickness and pressure rating: the Sch 80 fitting is heavier and the Sch 40 pipe becomes the weak point in the run. For a Schedule 80 system spec, keep pipe and fittings both Schedule 80.
7) What do I need besides the elbow to make up the joint?
Nothing ships with the fitting except the fitting. For a socket joint you supply CPVC primer and CPVC solvent cement rated for the pipe size you are running, plus applicators. Larger sizes such as 6 and 8 inch take heavy-bodied cement and usually a second set of hands to hold the joint during set. No gaskets, no threads, no sealant tape involved.
8) Is a 90-degree CPVC elbow the right choice, or should I use two 45s?
The 5107 turns the line a full 90 degrees in one fitting, the tightest turn and the simplest to lay out when you are dropping off a header or turning at a wall. Two 45-degree elbows sweep the turn over a longer run and cut pressure loss, which matters on long pumped lines or where you are tight on available head. For most branch work and commercial plumbing drops, the single 90 is what gets installed.
9) Can I use this elbow in an underground irrigation line?
Yes. Irrigation is one of the listed uses, and Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is noted for underground performance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode in buried service. It is a solvent-welded socket joint, so there is no threaded connection to back out or corrode in the trench.
10) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 1 inch or 2 inch CPVC Sch 80 socket elbow?
One inch is CB05450 and 2 inch is CB05600. The rest of the run: 1/4 inch CB05300, 3/4 inch CB05400, 1-1/4 inch CB05500, 1-1/2 inch CB05550, 2-1/2 inch CB05650, 3 inch CB05700, 6 inch CB05800, 8 inch CB05850. All are the same 5107 socket 90, Universal Part No. 1806.
11) Will this light grey elbow match my existing CPVC piping color?
The 5107 is light grey, which is the standard Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 color. It will not match the tan/cream CTS CPVC used for residential hot and cold water lines, and those are a different sizing system anyway. If your existing industrial or commercial grey Sch 80 CPVC is Corzan, this matches it.
