Nibco CB17955 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Are the ends on this Nibco CPVC union threaded or solvent weld?
Both ends are female sockets for solvent cement, S x S. You cut the pipe square, prime and cement it into the socket on each side. If your run terminates in male threads, you need a threaded union or a transition adapter instead, because nothing on the 5133E takes a thread.
2) How hot can the Corzan CPVC union run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is the headline reason to use CPVC rather than PVC on a hot water or elevated-temperature process line. Keep in mind that pressure rating on any thermoplastic falls off as temperature climbs, so derate per the system design.
3) Is the EPDM seal in this union OK for my chemical line?
The EPDM seal has good abrasion and tear resistance and strong chemical resistance overall, but it is not recommended for petroleum oils or most strong acids. If your line carries oil, fuel, or concentrated acid, specify a union with a different elastomer seal rather than the EPDM version. For water, most process and irrigation service it is the usual choice.
4) Can I use this CPVC union on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also meets ASTM F1970. It carries a lead-free application designation, and the intended service covers commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation systems.
5) Can I air test a CPVC Schedule 80 piping system with this union installed?
No. Do not use or test the system with compressed air or other gases. Thermoplastic fittings under gas pressure can fail suddenly. Hydrostatic test only, after the solvent cement joints have cured.
6) Will this union mate with Schedule 40 CPVC pipe?
The 5133E is a Schedule 80 fitting, so its socket is sized to CPVC pipe OD, which is the same for Sch 40 and Sch 80 in a given nominal size. The difference is wall thickness and therefore pressure rating, so joining Sch 80 fittings to Sch 40 pipe drops the system rating to the weaker component. On a Sch 80 spec job, run Sch 80 pipe throughout.
7) Why put a union in a solvent-welded CPVC line instead of a coupling?
A solvent-cemented coupling is permanent, so servicing a pump, valve or strainer downstream means cutting the pipe. The 5133E union breaks apart at the nut, letting you drop out the component and reassemble on the same EPDM seal. Standard practice is a union on each side of anything you expect to remove.
8) Is this union grey CPVC or white PVC? I need it to match my existing Corzan system.
Light grey Corzan CPVC, which is the standard color for CPVC Schedule 80 industrial pipe and fittings. White or dark grey PVC fittings are a different material and should not be substituted into a CPVC line, since PVC will not take the 210 degree F service temperature.
9) Is this the fitting Nibco also lists as Universal Part No. 1897?
Yes, the 5133E EPDM socket union carries Universal Part No. 1897. That is the number to cross-reference if your spec or takeoff sheet lists the fitting that way rather than by the CB-series part numbers.
10) Will CPVC hold up buried or in a corrosive plant environment?
Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is used for underground runs and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it shows up in industrial and irrigation service as well as commercial plumbing. It is also light enough to handle without rigging on the larger sizes up to 3 inch.
