Nibco CB00200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco 5101 CPVC coupling solvent weld or thread onto the pipe?
Both ends are socket (S x S), so the Nibco 5101 coupling is solvent cemented over the outside of the pipe, not threaded. End connection is listed as socket weld. Use a CPVC primer and CPVC solvent cement rated for Schedule 80; the fitting itself does not include cement.
2) I need to go from 2 inch down to 1-1/4 inch CPVC. Do I need a bushing or is there a reducing coupling?
There's a reducing coupling for that: the 2 inch x 1-1/4 inch size, part CB00850. The 5101 family runs both straight and reducing sockets, so you can make the reduction in one solvent weld joint instead of stacking a bushing inside a coupling. Other reductions available include 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 3/4, 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 1, 2-1/2 x 2, 3 x 2, 4 x 3, 4 x 2, 6 x 4 and 8 x 6.
3) Can I use this CPVC coupling on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The Corzan CPVC coupling is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is flagged lead-free, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable lines. System uses listed cover commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
4) Can I pressure test a CPVC line built with these couplings using compressed air?
No. The instruction on this fitting is explicit: do not use or test with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test with water only. Air testing thermoplastic pipe stores energy and can shatter the system.
5) Is this the same as a grey PVC Schedule 80 coupling?
No, and they are not interchangeable in cement or in rating. This is CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) in light grey, made to ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC socket fittings. PVC fittings look similar but run a lower temperature limit and take PVC cement. CPVC joints need CPVC solvent cement.
6) Which Nibco part number is the 1 inch CPVC Schedule 80 socket coupling?
The 1 inch straight socket coupling is CB00200. If you are reducing from 1 inch, CB00250 is 1 x 3/4 and CB00300 is 1 x 1/2. All three are the 5101 Corzan CPVC Sch 80 pattern with female sockets both ends.
7) Can these CPVC couplings be buried underground?
Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 is noted for underground performance and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, so buried irrigation and service runs are within its listed uses. Bed and backfill it like any thermoplastic line, and keep solvent welded joints fully cured before backfilling or pressurizing.
