Nibco CB01750 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are the Nibco Chemtrol 5101-3-3 CPVC couplings threaded on both ends or socket?
Both ends are female NPT thread, no socket. The Chemtrol Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 coupling is an F x F threaded fitting, so it screws onto male-threaded pipe ends or nipples. If your run is plain-end pipe meant to be solvent cemented, you need a socket coupling instead, or a male adapter to transition to these threads.
2) Can I use these CPVC couplings on compressed air lines?
No. The Chemtrol CPVC fittings carry an explicit instruction not to use or test with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, hydrostatic test only. For air service use metal pipe rated for compressed gas.
3) Are these Nibco CPVC couplings approved for potable water?
They are certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and the fitting is listed as a lead-free application, which is what a potable water inspection looks for. The fittings also meet ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC socket-type fittings.
4) What pipe sizes do the Nibco Chemtrol 5101-3-3 threaded couplings come in?
Straight couplings run 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Reducing versions cover 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 3/4, 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1, 2 x 3/4, 2 x 1/2 and 2-1/2 x 2. Above 2-1/2 inch the couplings are straight size only.
5) What is the maximum service temperature for Chemtrol Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 threaded couplings?
210 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. Keep in mind that threaded thermoplastic joints are pressure derated compared with solvent cemented socket joints, and CPVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so size the system to the manufacturer's temperature/pressure derating for threaded fittings.
6) Do I need a separate reducing bushing to go from 2 inch down to 1/2 inch CPVC?
Not with these. The Chemtrol threaded coupling line includes reducing sizes right down to 2 inch x 1/2 inch as a single female x female fitting (part CB02600), so one fitting does the size change and the joint. Other common drops available the same way include 2 x 3/4, 2 x 1 and 2 x 1-1/4.
7) Can these threaded CPVC couplings be used as a union for future service?
A threaded coupling is not a union. Because both ends are fixed female NPT, you cannot break the joint without rotating pipe, so on a run that needs periodic disassembly, specify a CPVC union at that point instead and use these couplings for straight joins and size changes.
8) Will a light grey CPVC coupling match my existing Schedule 80 CPVC system?
Light grey is the standard Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 color, so these couplings visually match the rest of a Corzan CPVC run. Schedule 80 PVC is typically dark grey and Schedule 40 PVC white, so if your existing pipe is one of those, you are looking at a different material and these are not the matching fitting.
9) What applications are these Chemtrol CPVC Schedule 80 couplings intended for?
