1) Is the Nibco Chemtrol 5118 CPVC bushing threaded on both ends or does one side get solvent welded?
Both ends are threaded, no cement involved. The Chemtrol Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 flush bushing is a male NPT by female NPT reducer, so it threads into a female port and gives you a smaller female NPT outlet. If your run is socket fitted, you need a socket style reducer bushing instead, this one will not glue.
2) What size reductions can I get in the Chemtrol CPVC Schedule 80 threaded bushing?
Twenty two reductions, from 1/2 x 1/4 inch up to 4 x 3 inch. The common steps are covered (3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2, 2-1/2 x 2, 3 x 2-1/2, 4 x 3) and so are the big jumps in one fitting: 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1/2, 3 x 1-1/2 and 4 x 2. Order by the pipe size pair, for example 2 x 1 inch is part CB13750.
3) Can I use this CPVC bushing on a compressed air line?
No. Chemtrol states plainly that the fitting must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing, so hydrostatic test only. It is built for liquid service in commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead free systems.
4) Is this CPVC bushing approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead free application, which is what a potable water spec normally calls for. The fitting also meets ASTM F439 for CPVC Schedule 80 socket type fittings.
5) How hot can CPVC Schedule 80 threaded bushings run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 F. Keep in mind that threaded plastic joints carry a lower pressure rating than solvent welded ones and that derating gets steeper as temperature climbs, so size the system for the hot side of the duty cycle.
6) Do I need thread sealant on a CPVC threaded bushing, and how tight should it go?
Use a PTFE tape or a sealant rated for CPVC. Plastic threads are tapered NPT and seal on interference, so hand tight plus one to two turns with a strap wrench is the norm. Overtightening splits the female fitting, and that is the usual failure on these. Never use a pipe wrench on the body.
7) What is the difference between this flush bushing and using a reducing coupling or a reducer bushing that inserts into a socket?
A flush style bushing sits inside the larger female port rather than adding length, so it reduces without moving the centerline of the next fitting. That matters in tight equipment skids and valve manifolds. A reducing coupling adds a fitting length and changes your takeout. If your CPVC system is solvent cemented throughout, use a socket reducer bushing, the Chemtrol 5118 is male thread by female thread and only fits into a threaded port.
8) Can I thread a metal nipple or brass fitting into this CPVC bushing?
Threading metal into the female CPVC side is where most joints crack, because metal male threads wedge the plastic. If you have to transition to metal, put the metal male thread into a CPVC female fitting only with light torque and sealant tape, and prefer running the CPVC male thread into the metal female port instead. The bushing gives you a male NPT on one end for exactly that.
9) Is the Nibco 5118 the same thing as universal part number 1839?
Yes, the Chemtrol CPVC Schedule 80 flush thread reducer bushing carries universal part number 1839. Order by the individual pipe size pair, for example 3/4 x 1/2 inch is CB13100 and 1-1/2 x 1 inch is CB13500.
