Nibco CB09150 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco 5116-4 CPVC plug thread into a female fitting or into a pipe?
It's a male NPT plug, so it threads into a female NPT port: a threaded tee branch, a coupling, a valve port, or a female adapter socketed onto the pipe. There are no solvent-weld ends on it, so if the opening you need to close is a plain socket, you'll need a female threaded adapter first or a socket plug instead.
2) How hot can this CPVC plug run? Can I use it on a hot water line?
Maximum service temperature is 210 F, which is why Corzan CPVC gets used on hot water and hot process lines where PVC would be out of its range. Pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so on a hot line size the system to the Chemtrol temperature derating data, not to the ambient Schedule 80 rating.
3) Can I use this plug to cap a line for an air pressure test?
No. Chemtrol CPVC fittings are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases, and that includes using a plug as a temporary cap for an air test. Hydrostatic testing with water is the accepted method for these systems.
4) Is the Nibco 5116-4 CPVC plug approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings, and it's flagged lead-free, so it's usable on potable water as well as commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation systems. The fitting is also made to ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 socket-type CPVC fittings.
5) Will this light grey plug match my existing CPVC piping, or is it a different material than my PVC?
It's light grey Corzan CPVC, the usual color for Schedule 80 CPVC industrial pipe, and it will not match the darker grey of Schedule 80 PVC. Colour aside, the difference matters: CPVC and PVC have different temperature ranges and different solvent cements. Since this plug is threaded rather than cemented, it will thread into a PVC female NPT port mechanically, but the assembly is only good to the lower-rated component's limits.
6) What do I need besides the plug to install it, and can I use regular pipe dope?
Nothing is included with the plug beyond the fitting itself. You supply the thread sealant, and on plastic threads that means PTFE tape or a sealant labelled safe for CPVC, since some petroleum-based pipe dopes attack the plastic. Hand tighten and then go one to two turns with a strap wrench only; overtightening a tapered plastic male thread splits the female fitting it's going into. Do not use solvent cement on the threads, this is a mechanical joint, not a cemented one.
7) I need to close off a Schedule 80 CPVC branch for future expansion. Is a threaded plug the right choice over a cemented cap?
Yes, if you want the branch back later. A male NPT plug in a female threaded port comes out with a wrench, while a solvent-cemented cap has to be cut off and the pipe rebuilt. Use the cemented cap where the closure is permanent and you want the joint's full strength with no thread sealant to maintain. For a branch you plan to reopen, the plug is the serviceable option.
8) What is the Nibco part number for the 1/2 inch and 2 inch Corzan CPVC thread plugs?
The 5116-4 series runs by size: 1/2 inch is CB09050 and 2 inch is CB09300. Others include CB09000 for 1/4 inch, CB09100 for 3/4 inch, CB09150 for 1 inch and CB09450 for 4 inch. Nibco also lists this fitting under universal part number 1850.
9) Will CPVC hold up in a corrosive chemical line better than metal?
Corzan CPVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the usual reason it replaces steel or copper on industrial and chemical service. Chemical compatibility is specific to the fluid though, so check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide for your media and concentration before committing the system.
