Nibco CA10350 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco 4516-4 PVC plug thread into a female fitting or glue in?
It threads in. The 4516-4 is a male NPT plug, so it screws into a female threaded port, a threaded coupling, or a FIPT branch on a tee. There is no socket on it, so it will not solvent weld. If your open end is a socket, you need a plug with a spigot rather than this one.
2) Can I use a Schedule 80 PVC plug in a Schedule 40 threaded fitting?
Yes. NPT is NPT, so the Schedule 80 plug threads into a Schedule 40 female port of the same nominal size. The difference is wall thickness and pressure rating, not thread form. Sch 80 is the heavier body, which is why it is the usual choice for industrial and higher pressure lines.
3) Is this PVC plug safe for potable water?
The Chemtrol PVC plug is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is carried as a lead-free item, which is what a potable water inspection looks for. It is also used in commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation systems.
4) How hot can the line run with a Nibco PVC thread plug in it?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature. Above that PVC loses strength, so hot water branches, boiler make-up, and steam condensate lines are out. For those use a different material. The plug also carries the ASTM D2467 designation for Sch 80 socket-type PVC fittings.
5) Can I pressure test a PVC plugged line with compressed air?
No. Chemtrol states plainly that these PVC fittings are not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic testing with water only. A plugged end is exactly where a gas test failure turns into shrapnel, so this matters more on a plug than on most fittings.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Chemtrol 4516-4 thread plug come in?
Ten sizes, from 1/4 inch up to 4 inch: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Order by nominal pipe size and the MPT matches that size port, for example 1 inch is CA10350 and 4 inch is CA10650.
7) Do I need thread sealant on a PVC male thread plug?
Yes, plan on PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread sealant on the male NPT threads, and hand tighten plus a turn or two with a strap wrench. PVC threads are tapered and over-torquing splits the female fitting. Sealant is not supplied with the plug.
8) Can I use this PVC plug to cap a future branch or a cleanout on an irrigation line?
That is the normal use. Thread it into a female port on a tee or coupling to close off a stub for a future takeoff, an unused manifold outlet, or a drain point, then back it out when you are ready to extend. Irrigation is one of its listed system uses, along with commercial plumbing and industrial piping. Keep the line under 140 F and water service only.
9) Is a threaded PVC plug the right choice, or should I solvent weld a cap instead?
Pick based on whether you want it back off. A male NPT plug threads into a female port and unscrews, so use it where the opening is a cleanout, a test port, or a stub you intend to open later. A solvent welded cap is permanent and has no thread to leak, so it is the better answer for a dead end you will never touch. The 4516-4 is the threaded option.
10) Will this dark grey plug match my existing Schedule 80 PVC piping?
It will. The plug is dark grey PVC, the standard color convention for Schedule 80, so it visually matches grey Sch 80 pipe and fittings already in the run. Schedule 40 PVC is typically white, so it will be noticeably darker against a white system even though it threads in fine.
