The PVC Schedule 40 plug is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L17045Y – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size pipe does the Nibco 4616-4 PVC plug thread into?
The 4616-4 plug is made in ten nominal sizes: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Order by the nominal pipe size of the fitting or female threaded port you are closing off, not by the outside diameter of the plug.
2) Is the Nibco 4616-4 plug threaded or solvent weld?
Threaded, male NPT. The 4616-4 has a male (MIPT) taper thread, so it screws into a female threaded socket, a threaded tee branch, a valve port, or a female adapter. It will not go into a solvent weld socket. If the opening you need to close is a plain solvent weld socket, you want a solvent weld cap or plug instead, or a female adapter cemented in first and then this plug threaded into it.
3) Can I use a PVC threaded plug on a compressed air line?
No. PVC Schedule 40 fittings must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Stored energy in a gas system makes a plastic failure explosive rather than a leak. Use the 4616-4 only on liquid service: cold water pressure distribution, irrigation, pool and spa, potable water, and chilled water.
4) Is the Nibco 4616-4 PVC plug approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The plug is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 for drinking water system components and carries NSF U.P. certification for potable use, and the material is listed lead-free. That is what a health department or a hospital or school facilities group will ask for on a domestic water line.
5) What standards does the Nibco PVC Schedule 40 plug meet for a spec submittal?
Three that get written on drawings: ASTM D2466 for PVC Schedule 40 fittings, ASTM D1784 cell class 12454 for the compound itself, and NSF/ANSI/CAN-61. It is also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. Cell class 12454 is the standard rigid PVC compound designation a spec will call for on Schedule 40 work.
6) Do I need to use thread sealant or Teflon tape on a PVC threaded plug?
Yes, tape or a PVC-compatible thread sealant on the male threads, and hand tight plus roughly one to two turns with a wrench. NPT is a taper thread, so it seals by interference, and overtightening a plastic male thread into a plastic female socket is the usual way these get split. Do not solvent cement the threads, the 4616-4 is a mechanical joint. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering both threading and solvent cementing.
7) Will a PVC plug corrode or seize in an irrigation valve box like a brass one does?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit, or corrode, which is the practical reason to use the 4616-4 instead of a metal plug on a buried irrigation manifold, a pool line, or a chemical feed point. It also has high corrosion and chemical resistance. A property manager who has had to cut out a seized galvanized plug on a zone valve will get the plug back out of a PVC port years later.
8) What do I use a PVC threaded plug for on an irrigation or pool system?
Closing off a threaded port you are not using or want access to later: an unused branch on a threaded tee, a spare zone port on an irrigation manifold, a test or drain port, a gauge tap, or a pressure test point during commissioning. Because the 4616-4 is threaded rather than cemented, it comes back out, which is what makes it the choice for anything you plan to open again. For a permanent dead end on a solvent weld socket, a cemented cap is the better call.
9) Can I use the Nibco 4616-4 plug on a commercial building's domestic water and on a residential job?
Both, plus irrigation. The 4616-4 is rated for commercial plumbing, residential plumbing, and irrigation systems, on cold water pressure distribution including potable and chilled water. The limits that decide it are the 140 degree F ceiling and the ban on gas service, not the building type.
10) Is the Nibco 4616-4 plug white PVC or gray CPVC?
White PVC, Schedule 40. Gray usually signals CPVC or a Schedule 80 PVC line, and those are different materials with different temperature and pressure ratings. If your existing pipe is white Schedule 40 PVC, this matches it. Thread dimensions are NPT either way, but match the material to the system you are working on.
