The PVC Schedule 40 plug is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L169450 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco 4616 PVC plug glue into a fitting socket or into a pipe?
It's a spigot plug, so it glues INTO a socket. The spigot end is sized like Schedule 40 pipe and solvent welds into the hub of a fitting, a valve socket, or a female adapter. If you need to cap the open end of a run of pipe instead, you want a cap with a socket end, not this plug.
2) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 plug to cap off an air line or pressure test a line with compressed air?
No. Nibco states plainly that these plastic fittings are not to be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. They're built for cold water pressure service, so hydrostatic testing with water only. Using a PVC plug on an air line is a failure risk, not a rated application.
3) Is this PVC plug approved for potable water on a commercial job?
Yes. The 4616 plug is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it's flagged lead-free, which is what a spec or inspector will be looking for on potable water. It also carries UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability and is made to ASTM D2466 from cell class 12454 compound per ASTM D1784.
4) Can I thread this plug in, or does it have to be glued?
It has to be glued. The 4616 is a plain spigot, no pipe threads, so it goes in with PVC primer and solvent cement. If you want a plug you can back out later for cleanout or service access, get a threaded MIPT plug and a female socket adapter instead. Once this one is cemented, the joint is permanent and has to be cut out.
5) Will a PVC Schedule 40 plug hold up on a buried irrigation line or a pool return?
Those are exactly the services it is made for: irrigation, pool and spa, potable and chilled water, on cold water pressure systems. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it's used underground and around treated pool water. What it is not for is hot water or gas service.
6) What do I need besides the plug to close off the line?
Just PVC primer and solvent cement rated for Schedule 40 PVC, plus a rag and a socket or fitting hub to plug into. No gaskets, no thread sealant, nothing ships with the plug. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering cut, clean, prime, cement and set time, and dry-fit the spigot before you cement so you know it bottoms in the socket.
7) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 4 inch PVC spigot plug?
For the 4 inch, the Nibco 4616 spigot plug is part number L169750P. The smaller sizes carry their own numbers, for example L16935Y at 1/2 inch, L16940Y at 3/4 inch, L169450 at 1 inch and L169700P at 3 inch. Quote the number with the size so there's no mix-up with the socket-end cap version.
8) Will this white PVC plug match the rest of my Schedule 40 system?
It's white PVC Schedule 40 made to ASTM D2466, the same standard as standard white Sch 40 socket fittings, so it matches on both color and dimensions. It is not CPVC (tan/cream) and not DWV, so don't pull it for a hot water or drainage system.
