1) How does a Nibco 4618-3 PVC bushing connect - does it glue or thread?
It does both, one end each. The 4618-3 is a Spg x FIPT bushing: the spigot end is sized like pipe and solvent-cements into the socket of a larger PVC Schedule 40 fitting, while the other end is female iron pipe thread that a male-threaded pipe or fitting screws into. So it takes you from a glued socket down to a threaded connection and a smaller size in one part.
2) What size reductions can I get in the Nibco 4618-3 bushing?
Thirty reducing combinations, from 1/2 x 1/4 inch up to 6 x 4 inch. 3) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 bushing on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use these PVC Schedule 40 fittings with compressed air or other gases. They are for cold water pressure systems only: irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water. For air service you need a piping system rated for it.
4) What is the maximum temperature for a Nibco PVC Schedule 40 bushing?
140 degrees F is the ceiling. That keeps it to cold water and chilled water service. Run hot water or a hydronic heating loop through it and the PVC loses pressure rating fast, so pick CPVC or metal for those lines.

Use the bushing when you already have a larger socket to drop into and you want a threaded outlet on the small side. The 4618-3 spigot glues straight into that larger fitting socket and gives you a female pipe thread at the reduced size, so no extra coupling is needed. If both ends of your transition are glued pipe runs rather than a fitting socket, a reducer coupling or a reducing bushing with a socket inlet is the cleaner part.
7) Can I use these bushings on an underground irrigation main?
Yes. Irrigation is one of the listed uses along with commercial and residential plumbing, and PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode in buried service. Keep in mind the threaded side is plastic, so hand-tighten plus a turn or two with the right tape or dope and do not wrench it down hard.
8) What size Nibco bushing do I need to run a 1/2 inch branch off a 2 inch PVC line?
The 2 x 1/2 inch size, Nibco MPN L17953YP. The 2 inch spigot cements into the 2 inch socket of your tee or coupling and leaves a 1/2 inch female thread for the branch. If you want the branch at 3/4 inch instead, the 2 x 3/4 is L17956Y.
9) Is this the white PVC bushing or the gray one?
White. Nibco's Schedule 40 PVC pressure fittings in this line are white, which is what matches standard white Sch 40 PVC water and irrigation pipe. Gray is typically CPVC or electrical conduit fittings, not this part.
