1) Is the Nibco 4618 PVC bushing threaded or solvent weld?
Threaded on both ends: the Nibco 4618 Schedule 40 PVC bushing is a M x F fitting, male thread on the large end that screws into a female threaded port, female thread on the small end that accepts a male threaded pipe or nipple. If your run is solvent cement socket, this is the wrong bushing for it.
2) What size reductions does the Nibco 4618 PVC bushing come in?
Fifteen reducing combinations, from 1/2 in. x 1/4 in. up to 3 in. x 2 in. In between you get 3/4 x 1/4, 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1/2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1/2, 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 1-1/4 and 2 x 1. The first number is the male thread side, the second is the female side.
3) Can I use a PVC threaded bushing on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature for this PVC Schedule 40 bushing is 140 degrees F, so it is for cold water pressure distribution only, irrigation, pool and spa, potable cold and chilled water. Domestic hot water and heating returns need a different material.
4) Can I use this PVC bushing on a compressed air line?
No. The manufacturer states plainly: do not test or use with compressed air or other gases. This is a liquid pressure fitting only, and that includes pressure testing the system. Test with water.
5) Will a threaded PVC bushing thread into a metal female fitting?
The male end is a standard NPT taper thread, so it will engage a metal female port, but plastic male into metal female is the joint most prone to splitting when over-tightened. Hand tight plus one to two turns with thread sealant, no pipe dope that attacks PVC, and never use the fitting body as a wrench point. Nothing beyond 140 degrees F on the line either.
6) What is the Nibco part number for a 3/4 x 1/2 PVC threaded bushing?
The 3/4 in. x 1/2 in. size is Nibco MPN L181000. Other common sizes: 1 x 3/4 is L181050, 1-1/4 x 1 is L181200, 2 x 1-1/2 is L181600 and 3 x 2 is L182250P.
7) Can I glue PVC pipe into this bushing?
No, not into this one. Both ends of the 4618 are threaded, M x F, so there is no socket to solvent cement. Sch 40 PVC can be joined either by solvent cementing or by threading, but a given fitting only accepts the ends it is made with. For a cemented reduction you need a socket reducer bushing instead.
8) Is this bushing suitable for commercial and irrigation work or just residential?
Both. System use covers commercial plumbing, residential plumbing and irrigation, and the description also names pool and spa and chilled water as applications. It is white Schedule 40 PVC throughout.
