The PVC Schedule 40 bushing is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L17805Y – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does Spg x Slip mean on a Nibco 4618 PVC bushing, and how does it install?
Spigot by slip. The outside of the bushing is sized like pipe, so it drops into the socket of a larger fitting, and the inside is a slip socket that accepts the smaller pipe size. Both ends are solvent weld, so you prime and cement it in place rather than threading it. That is what makes it the part to use when you already have a hub-size fitting in the ground and need to step down without cutting in a reducing coupling.
2) What size reductions does the Nibco 4618 PVC Schedule 40 bushing come in?
Reductions run from 3/4 x 1/2 inch up to 8 x 6 inch, 34 combinations in all. The big-jump sizes are there too, so you can go straight from 2-1/2 to 3/4, 6 to 2, or 8 to 4 in one fitting instead of stacking reducers. Larger steps include 4 x 2, 5 x 3, 6 x 3 and 6 x 4.
3) Is the Nibco 4618 bushing approved for potable drinking water?
It carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 certification and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it is listed as lead-free. That covers potable cold water distribution. The fitting also meets ASTM D2466 for Schedule 40 PVC socket fittings and ASTM D1784 cell class 12454, and is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability, which is what a spec-driven institutional job usually asks for.
4) Can I use this PVC bushing on a compressed air line?
No, and this one is a safety issue, not a preference. Nibco states plainly that the fitting must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. PVC fails brittle under stored gas energy. Pressure test with water only, and use metal or air-rated pipe for shop air.
5) Should I use a bushing or a reducing coupling to step down my PVC line?
A bushing is the choice when the larger side is already a fitting socket, a tee branch, a valve hub, a pump port. The spigot end plugs that socket and gives you the smaller slip socket inside, so you lose no length in the run. A reducing coupling is what you want when you are joining two runs of pipe end to end, because a bushing has no pipe socket on its large side. On the 4618 the large side is spigot, so plan on landing it in a fitting.
6) Will a Nibco 4618 bushing work in a Schedule 80 fitting?
The 4618 is a Schedule 40 socket fitting built to ASTM D2466, and it is white. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameters and socket dimensions at a given nominal size, so the spigot will physically enter a Sch 80 socket, but the pressure rating of the assembly drops to the Schedule 40 part. On a job specced Sch 80 throughout, use a gray Sch 80 bushing instead so the whole line carries the same rating.
7) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 2 inch to 1 inch PVC bushing?
That reduction is MPN L17805Y in the Nibco 4618 Spg x Slip Schedule 40 line. Neighbouring sizes in the same family: 2 x 1-1/2 is L977900, 2 x 1-1/4 is L978000 and 2 x 1/2 is L17815Y. Each reduction is its own part number, so order by the size pair rather than the series number alone.
8) Is this bushing suitable for an underground irrigation system?
Yes. Irrigation is one of the listed applications along with commercial and residential plumbing, and PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is what matters for a buried fitting. Keep it on the cold side of the system and off any gas or air service.
