1) Will a Nibco 4601 PVC coupling glue onto Schedule 40 PVC pipe I already have in the ground?
Yes, if the pipe is Schedule 40 PVC and the size matches. The 4601 is a slip x slip (S x S) socket coupling made to solvent weld onto Sch 40 PVC pipe, and it is built to ASTM D2466, the standard for Sch 40 PVC socket fittings. Sizes run 1/2 inch through 8 inch. Both ends are sockets, so it joins two plain pipe ends, no threading involved.
2) Can I use a Nibco 4601 PVC coupling on a hot water line?
No. The PVC Sch 40 coupling is a cold water pressure fitting with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F, so it does not belong on domestic hot water or any heated line. Its intended systems are irrigation, pool and spa, potable cold water and chilled water. For hot water you need a different material entirely, not a PVC Sch 40 socket fitting.
3) Is the Nibco 4601 coupling safe for drinking water and lead-free?
Yes for potable cold water. The 4601 PVC coupling is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and the compound is ASTM D1784 cell class 12454 rigid PVC. It is carried as a lead-free application fitting. That covers potable cold water distribution; it is not a hot water fitting.
4) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 coupling on a compressed air line in my shop?
No, and this one is explicit about it: do not test or use PVC Sch 40 fittings with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the line with air. PVC pressure fittings are rated for liquid service only. Test with water.
