1) Is the Nibco 4606 elbow solvent weld or threaded?
Solvent weld on both ends, S x S. You cement it to the outside of the pipe with PVC primer and cement, no threads and no gasket. If the run you are tying into is threaded, you need a male or female adapter to transition, because neither socket on this elbow will accept a threaded pipe end.
2) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 45-degree elbow on a hot water line?
No. The 4606 is a cold water pressure fitting with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water and heating loops. Its intended service is irrigation, pool and spa, potable cold water and chilled water. For hot water you need CPVC or another material entirely.
3) Will the Nibco 4606 work on compressed air?
No, and this one matters for safety. The 4606 PVC Schedule 40 elbow is not to be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. PVC fails brittle under gas pressure. Use it on liquid service only, and pressure test with water.
4) Is the Nibco 4606 PVC elbow approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The 4606 carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and the material is listed lead-free, so it is usable on potable cold water systems. It is also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability and is made to ASTM D2466 for Schedule 40 socket fittings, with compound to ASTM D1784 cell class 12454.
5) Will a Nibco 4606 elbow fit Schedule 80 PVC pipe?
The sockets are sized to ASTM D2466 Schedule 40 dimensions, and Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the elbow will cement onto Schedule 80 pipe of the same size. What you lose is pressure rating: the fitting is a Schedule 40 fitting and the joint is only as strong as the Schedule 40 fitting. On a job specified Schedule 80 throughout, use Schedule 80 fittings.
6) Should I use a 45-degree elbow or two 90s for an offset in a PVC line?
A pair of 45s, which is what the 4606 is (45 degree, 1/8 bend), gives you a gentler direction change and less pressure drop than a 90, which is why offsets and jogs around obstructions are usually built with two 45s rather than two 90s. Use a 90 where you need a hard turn in tight space. On irrigation mains and pool circulation where flow loss shows up at the pump, the 45 is the better choice.
7) Is the Nibco 4606 elbow OK for a pool or spa circulation line?
Yes, pool and spa is one of its named services, along with irrigation, potable water and chilled water, and the spec sheet lists commercial plumbing, irrigation and residential plumbing as system uses. Keep the water below 140 degrees F, which covers pool and normal spa operation but not a heater outlet running hotter than that.
8) What color is the Nibco 4606 PVC elbow, and will it match my existing white PVC fittings?
White, which is the standard color for PVC Schedule 40 pressure fittings and matches typical white Schedule 40 pipe and fittings already in a building. If your existing system is gray, that is Schedule 80 and the visual match will be off even though the socket size is the same.
9) Will PVC fittings corrode in a buried irrigation main?
No. PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up against chemicals, which is why the 4606 gets specified for buried irrigation and for chemically treated pool water where metal fittings would give out. The material is polyvinyl chloride to ASTM D1784 cell class 12454.
