1) Will the Nibco 4611 PVC tee glue onto standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe, or does it thread on?
The 4611 tee is solvent weld on all three openings, socket x socket x socket. You cut the pipe square, prime and cement it. There are no threads anywhere on the fitting, so if you need a threaded branch to land a valve or a hose bib you want a different tee. It is built to ASTM D2466, the socket-type Schedule 40 PVC fitting standard, so it mates with any Schedule 40 PVC pipe of the matching nominal size.
2) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 tee on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature on the 4611 PVC tee is 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water, boiler loops and hot recirculation. It is a cold water pressure fitting: irrigation, pool and spa, potable cold water and chilled water. For hot side work you need CPVC or a metal fitting instead.
3) Is the Nibco 4611 tee approved for drinking water?
Yes. The 4611 carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 for potable water contact and is NSF U.P. Certified, and the compound is ASTM D1784 cell class 12454. It is also flagged lead-free. That combination is what a facility or institutional spec normally asks for on a potable cold water branch.
4) Can I use a PVC tee on a compressed air line in my shop?
No, and this one is explicit about it: do not test or use with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the system with air. PVC under gas pressure fails by shattering. Test with water and keep the 4611 on liquid service only.
5) Does Nibco make a 4611 tee that reduces the branch, like 2 inch run with a 1 inch outlet?
Yes, reducing patterns are a large part of the 4611 range. Branch reducers include 2 x 2 x 1, 3 x 3 x 2, 4 x 4 x 2, 6 x 6 x 4 and 8 x 8 x 4, down to small stuff like 1 x 1 x 1/2. There are also tees that reduce on the run itself, such as 1 x 3/4 x 1/2 and 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 x 3/4, so you can drop a size through the run and take a smaller branch in one fitting instead of stacking bushings.
6) What sizes does the Nibco 4611 PVC tee come in?
Straight tees run 1/2 inch through 8 inch, including the odd sizes people struggle to source: 2-1/2 inch and 5 inch are both in the line. On top of the straight sizes there are 40-plus reducing combinations. For a large irrigation main or a pool return header, the 6 and 8 inch bodies with 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch branches cover most takeoffs without a bushing.
7) How do I order a reducing tee so I get the branch on the right opening?
Read the size call-out in order: run, run, branch. A 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 has a 3 inch straight run with a 1-1/2 inch branch. Where the first two numbers differ, like 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 x 1, the run itself steps down and the last number is still the branch. All three sockets are solvent weld regardless of size, so the only thing you specify is the size string.
8) Will PVC tees hold up in a corrosive or chemical environment where steel pipe rusts out?
PVC does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it has high corrosion and chemical resistance, which is the usual reason it replaces galvanized on irrigation mains, pool equipment rooms and chilled water. The limit is temperature, not chemistry: 140 degrees F max, and no gas service.
9) Can I thread a Schedule 40 PVC tee instead of gluing it?
Not this one. PVC Schedule 40 as a system can be joined by solvent cementing or threading, but the 4611 is supplied socket on all three ends, so it takes cement only. If you need a threaded connection at that point, glue a socket-by-female-thread adapter into the branch rather than trying to cut threads into the fitting.
10) Will this white PVC tee match the pipe already in my building, or is that the gray electrical stuff?
The 4611 is white PVC, which is the plumbing and irrigation color. Gray PVC is generally electrical conduit and is a different product line entirely. If the existing runs on your property are white Schedule 40 pressure pipe, this matches them visually and dimensionally.
