The PVC Schedule 40 union is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L171250 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco 4633 union thread onto pipe or does it get glued?
Both ends are socket (slip) and get solvent cemented onto Schedule 40 PVC pipe. The end connection is S x S, solvent weld only, so there are no threads on either side. If you need a threaded connection at that point in the run, you would transition with a male or female adapter before the union.
2) Why use a PVC union instead of just a coupling?
A coupling is a permanent solvent welded joint, you have to cut it out to service anything downstream. The 4633 union gives you a threaded nut in the middle that unscrews, so a pump, filter, valve or spa heater can be pulled without cutting pipe. Both ends still solvent cement to Schedule 40 pipe, so installation is the same as a coupling, you just gain a break point.
3) Can I use the Nibco 4633 union on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, and it is intended for cold water pressure distribution, irrigation, pool and spa, potable and chilled water. Domestic hot water and boiler loops are outside what this PVC fitting is rated for, use CPVC or metal there.
4) Can I use this PVC union on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use these PVC fittings with compressed air or other gases. It is a water service fitting only, for cold water pressure distribution.
5) What sizes does the Nibco 4633 PVC union come in?
The 4633 slip x slip union is offered in 3/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch pipe sizes. Part numbers run L171050 for 3/4 inch, L171200 for 1-1/2 inch and L171250 for 2 inch. All are white PVC Schedule 40.
6) Will the 4633 union work in an irrigation main or a pool equipment pad?
Yes, those are exactly the applications Nibco lists for it, along with commercial and residential plumbing. In a pool or spa pad it is the standard way to isolate the pump and filter, and in irrigation it lets you pull a valve manifold section without recutting the lateral.
7) Will this union fit Schedule 80 PVC pipe?
The sockets are sized for Schedule 40 PVC. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the socket accepts the pipe, but the fitting itself is a Schedule 40 body and should be used within Schedule 40 system pressures. For a Schedule 80 rated system, specify a Schedule 80 union.
8) Do I need anything else to install the Nibco 4633 union?
Yes, the union ships as the fitting only. You supply PVC primer and solvent cement rated for the pipe size, plus a rag and a deburring tool. Both sockets are solvent weld, and Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions for cure and set times before pressurizing.
