1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4617 PVC cap come in?
The 4617 slip cap runs from 1/2 inch up to 8 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 inch. Order by the nominal pipe size you are capping, not by the measured OD of the pipe.
2) Is the Nibco 4617 cap threaded or does it glue on?
It glues on. The 4617 is a socket (slip) cap with a solvent weld end connection, so it cements over the outside of the pipe with PVC primer and cement. If you need a cap you can remove later, you want a threaded FIPT cap over a male adapter instead, not this one.
3) Can I use this PVC cap to pressure test a line with compressed air?
No. Nibco specifically states not to test or use these PVC fittings with compressed air or other gases. Cap the line and test hydrostatically with water. The 4617 is rated for cold water pressure service only.
4) What is the temperature limit on the Nibco 4617 PVC cap?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That rules it out for hot water lines or anything downstream of a water heater. It is built for cold water pressure distribution, chilled water, irrigation, pool and spa, and potable water.
5) Is the Nibco 4617 cap approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. It carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 certification and is NSF U.P. certified for potable use, and it is listed as lead-free. That covers it for domestic water work in commercial and residential plumbing as well as irrigation.
6) Will this cap fit Schedule 80 PVC pipe?
The socket is sized to Schedule 40 PVC dimensions per ASTM D2466. Sch 40 and Sch 80 share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the socket will accept the pipe, but the fitting itself is a Schedule 40 fitting and its pressure rating is the Sch 40 rating, not Sch 80. On a job specced Schedule 80 throughout, order a Sch 80 cap.
7) What spec do I cite to get this cap approved on a submittal?
The 4617 meets ASTM D2466 for Schedule 40 PVC socket fittings and the compound meets ASTM D1784 cell class 12454. It is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability and NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 certified. Material is white PVC.
8) Can I use this cap to close off a buried irrigation stub for a future zone?
That is a normal use for it. The 4617 is intended for cold water pressure systems including irrigation, and PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode in the ground. Bear in mind it solvent welds on permanently, so bringing that stub back into service means cutting the cap off and adding a coupling.
9) Do I need anything besides the cap to make the joint?
The cap ships on its own. You also need PVC primer and solvent cement rated for the pipe size, plus a clean square cut and deburred pipe end. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering cure and set times, which stretch considerably on the larger 5, 6 and 8 inch caps.
