The PVC Schedule 40 cross is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L190200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 4635 PVC cross glue onto standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe, or does it need threading?
Solvent weld on all four openings. The 4635 cross is configured S x S x S x S, meaning every port is a socket that takes pipe with primer and PVC cement, no threads anywhere on the fitting. It is a Schedule 40 fitting, so it sockets over Schedule 40 pipe of the matching nominal size. If you need a threaded connection at this junction, you have to transition with a separate male or female adapter, because nothing on this cross will accept a threaded nipple.
2) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 cross on a compressed air line?
No. The 4635 cross is not to be tested or used with compressed air or other gases, and doing so is dangerous with PVC. It is built for cold water pressure distribution: irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water. For air service you need a piping system rated for gas, not Schedule 40 PVC. Note also that this applies to pressure testing, so do not air test a system built with these fittings.
3) Is the Nibco 4635 cross rated for potable drinking water and lead-free codes?
Yes. The 4635 PVC cross is certified NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and NSF U.P. Certified, and the material is listed as lead-free, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable water branch. It is also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. Those listings are what let it go into commercial and residential potable systems rather than irrigation only.
4) How hot can water get before a PVC Schedule 40 cross fails?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature on the 4635 cross. That rules it out for any hot water distribution line. It suits cold water, chilled water, irrigation, and pool and spa returns, where temperatures stay well under that ceiling. Keep in mind PVC also loses pressure rating as it warms toward that limit, so a line that sees sun load or warm process water deserves a look at CPVC instead.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4635 PVC cross come in?
Nine nominal sizes, from 1/2 inch up through 4 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. All four ports are the same size on any given cross, so these are straight crosses, not reducing crosses. If your branch lines run a different size than the main, you will be reducing with bushings or reducer couplings off the cross rather than ordering a reducing pattern.
6) When would I use a PVC cross instead of two tees on an irrigation manifold?
A cross puts four ports at one point, so it takes two opposed branches off a run in a single fitting rather than two tees and a short nipple between them. That keeps the branches truly in line with each other and cuts two solvent joints out of the assembly, which matters on a buried irrigation manifold where every joint is a future leak. Use two tees instead when the branches need to be offset from each other or take different sizes, since the 4635 is a same-size cross on all four ports.
7) What part number do I order for a 2 inch Nibco slip cross?
The 2 inch size of the Nibco 4635 PVC Schedule 40 cross is MPN L190500. Adjacent sizes run L190400 for 1-1/2 inch and L190600P for 2-1/2 inch. Note the P suffix appears on the larger sizes, 2-1/2 inch and up, so do not assume the number follows the same pattern across the whole range when you spec a takeoff list.
8) Will this white PVC cross match the schedule 40 fittings already in my system?
The 4635 cross is white PVC, which is the standard color for Schedule 40 pressure fittings, so it visually matches existing Sch 40 work. Gray fittings are usually Schedule 80, and dark gray or cream can indicate CPVC, which is a different material and a different cement. If the run you are tying into is white Sch 40 PVC with solvent welded sockets, this drops straight in at the matching nominal size.
9) Does a PVC cross corrode or scale in buried or pool chemical service?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why the 4635 holds up in pool and spa lines and in direct burial irrigation where a metal fitting would be attacked. The compound meets ASTM D1784 cell class 12454 and the fitting meets ASTM D2466, the standard for Schedule 40 PVC socket fittings, so it is the spec a drawing calls out by number rather than a generic plastic fitting.
10) Do I need anything besides the cross to make up the joints?
The cross ships as the fitting alone. Solvent welded sockets need PVC primer and PVC solvent cement rated for the pipe size, plus an applicator sized to the socket on the 2-1/2 through 4 inch fittings, where a small dauber will not wet the joint fast enough before the cement sets. Nothing threads on, so no tape or pipe dope is involved anywhere on this fitting.
