1) Does the Nibco 4617-3 PVC cap thread onto a male pipe end, or is it a solvent weld socket cap?
It threads on. The 4617-3 is a female NPT (FIPT) cap, so it screws onto a male threaded pipe end or a male adapter. If your pipe end is plain and you planned to glue it, you need the socket style cap instead, not this one.
2) Can I use this PVC cap to cap off a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that these PVC fittings are not to be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. They are for cold water pressure service: irrigation, pool and spa, potable and chilled water. Use metal for air.
3) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4617-3 PVC cap come in?
Nine sizes, all NPT: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Order by nominal pipe size, same as the pipe it caps.
4) What do I need to make up the joint on a threaded PVC cap?
Nothing ships with the cap. You need PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread sealant on the male threads, and it goes on hand tight plus one to two turns with a strap wrench. Do not over-tighten a plastic female fitting, that is what splits caps. No solvent cement is involved with this FIPT version.
5) Can I use this cap as a temporary test plug for a pressure test on a water line?
For a hydrostatic water test, yes, that is within the cap's intended cold water pressure service, and being threaded it comes back off afterwards. What you cannot do is pneumatic testing, Nibco prohibits testing these fittings with compressed air or gases.
6) Will this cap hold up buried in an irrigation system?
Irrigation is one of its listed system uses, along with commercial and residential plumbing. PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up in wet and buried service. It is white PVC, so if the rest of your buried line is gray Sch 80 the color will not match, though the NPT thread still mates.
7) What is the Nibco part number for the 2 inch threaded PVC cap?
The 2 inch 4617-3 cap is Nibco MPN L17660Y. Sizes carry their own numbers: 1/2 inch is L976350, 3/4 inch L976400, 1 inch L976450, 1-1/2 inch L17655Y, 3 inch L176700P and 4 inch L176750P. Give the supplier the size and the 4617-3 series and you will land on the right one.
