1) What do the two numbers mean on a Nibco 4604 male adapter like the 1-1/2" x 2" size?
On the 4604 male adapter the sizes are given as thread size by socket size. It's a MIPT x slip fitting, so one end is male pipe thread and the other is a solvent-weld socket. Straight sizes (1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", 3", 4", 6", 8") have both ends the same. The bushed sizes let you change size across the fitting: 3/4" x 1/2", 1/2" x 3/4", 1" x 3/4", 3/4" x 1", 1" x 1-1/4", 1-1/4" x 1", 1-1/2" x 1-1/4", 1-1/4" x 1-1/2", 1-1/2" x 2", 2" x 1-1/2", and 2" x 2-1/2". 2) Can I use a Nibco 4604 PVC male adapter on a compressed air line?
No. The 4604 PVC male adapter is for cold water pressure service only, and Nibco states outright not to test or use it with compressed air or other gases. Its listed uses are irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water. For air, go to a metal fitting.
3) Is the Nibco 4604 PVC male adapter approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The 4604 carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and the fitting is flagged lead-free. That covers potable water distribution as well as irrigation and chilled water lines. It's also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability and made to ASTM D2466 from cell class 12454 PVC compound per ASTM D1784.
4) Will a Nibco 4604 male adapter thread into a brass or galvanized female fitting?
It will. The 4604 has a standard male pipe thread (MIPT) on one end, so it mates with any female NPT port of the same size, brass, galvanized steel or plastic. Use thread sealant tape or a non-hardening pipe dope on the plastic thread and hand tighten plus one to two turns with a strap wrench. Over-torquing a PVC male thread into a metal female is the usual way these split. If the metal side is the male thread, you need a female adapter (S x FIPT) instead, not this one.
5) Does the Nibco 4604 fit Schedule 80 PVC pipe or only Schedule 40?
The 4604 is a Schedule 40 PVC fitting made to ASTM D2466, so the socket takes Schedule 40 pipe of the marked size. Sch 40 and Sch 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so Sch 80 pipe will physically enter the socket, but the pressure rating of the assembly then comes down to this Sch 40 fitting, not the heavier pipe. If the system is specified Sch 80 throughout, use a Sch 80 fitting.
6) How do I join the slip end of a PVC male adapter, and can I thread both ends?
The socket (slip) end is solvent cemented to the pipe with PVC primer and cement; the other end is a molded male thread you screw into a female port. You don't cut threads on a Nibco 4604. PVC Schedule 40 in general is joined either by solvent cementing or threading, and this fitting does one of each, which is exactly why it's used as the transition from cemented pipe to a threaded valve, pump, meter or hose connection.
7) Is white PVC male adapter OK for buried irrigation mainline and for a pool pump?
Both are listed uses. The 4604 is called out for irrigation and for pool and spa service, along with commercial and residential plumbing. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is what makes it the usual choice for buried irrigation and wet pool equipment pads. Keep it on cold water pressure service only.
8) Is a PVC male adapter the right fitting to connect to a hot water line?
No. PVC Schedule 40 fittings like the 4604 are for cold water pressure distribution, including chilled water. Hot water service calls for a different material, not PVC. If the line is cold potable, irrigation, pool or chilled water, this is the correct transition fitting.
9) Will a white Nibco 4604 adapter match the gray PVC fittings already on my system?
The 4604 is white. Sch 40 pressure fittings are commonly white while Sch 80 is gray, so a white fitting in a gray run usually signals a schedule change rather than a fit problem. Dimensionally it still joins Schedule 40 pipe to ASTM D2466. If your facility standardizes on gray for a reason (Sch 80 spec, UV exposure, color coding), match it on the spec, not on this fitting.
