The PVC Schedule 40 female adapter is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L825250 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What do the two numbers in a size like 3/4" x 1/2" mean on the Nibco 4603 female adapter?
On the 4603 PVC female adapter the first number is the slip socket that cements onto pipe and the second is the female NPT thread size. So 3/4" x 1/2" cements to 3/4 inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe and threads onto a 1/2 inch male NPT nipple or fitting. Straight sizes like 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", 3", 4", 5", 6" and 8" are the same on both ends. The reducing combinations offered are 1/2" x 3/4", 1/2" x 1", 3/4" x 1/2", 3/4" x 1" and 1" x 3/4", so you can step up or down at the transition without adding a bushing.
2) How hot can water get through a PVC Schedule 40 female adapter before it is a problem?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature on the 4603 PVC adapter, and that ceiling drops the working pressure well before you reach it. It is a cold water fitting: domestic hot water, boiler makeup, condensate off a high temperature loop and anything on a water heater outlet are outside what PVC Schedule 40 handles. Chilled water and irrigation are squarely in range.
3) Is the Nibco 4603 PVC female adapter approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The 4603 carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 certification for drinking water system components and is NSF U.P. Certified for potable use, and the fitting is listed as lead-free. It also meets ASTM D2466 for Schedule 40 PVC socket fittings and is made from ASTM D1784 cell class 12454 compound, which is the compound designation specifiers write on a plumbing submittal.
4) Do I glue or thread a slip x FIPT PVC female adapter?
Both, one end each. The socket end is solvent cemented over the pipe, and the FIPT end takes a male thread. That is the whole point of the 4603: it is the transition from a cemented PVC run to threaded equipment, a hose bibb, a valve, a pump port or a metal nipple. Thread sealant only on the male thread going in, and hand tight plus a modest turn with a strap wrench. PVC female threads split if you torque them like steel.
5) Will a Schedule 40 PVC female adapter fit Schedule 80 pipe?
Yes on the socket. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so the 4603 socket cements over Schedule 80 pipe of the same size. The difference is wall thickness and therefore pressure rating, and the fitting is rated as a Schedule 40 part, so the assembly is governed by the Schedule 40 fitting, not by the heavier pipe. On a system specified Schedule 80 throughout, order a Schedule 80 fitting instead.
6) Should I use a female adapter or a male adapter coming off a PVC line?
It depends which half carries the female thread. The 4603 gives you a female NPT socket on the fitting, so you use it when the equipment you are connecting to presents a male thread, a nipple, a pump discharge stub or a threaded valve tailpiece. If the equipment has a female port instead, you want a male adapter (slip x MIPT) so the PVC side supplies the male thread. Where you have the choice, putting the male thread on the plastic side is the more forgiving arrangement, because a metal male thread wedging into a PVC female socket is what cracks fittings.
7) What sizes does the Nibco 4603 PVC female adapter come in for a large irrigation main?
Straight sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 inch, so the 4603 covers everything from a lateral to an 8 inch main. On irrigation work the large sizes are typically the transition into a threaded valve body or a flange assembly. Reducing versions stop at 1 inch, so above that you are matching size for size.
8) Can I run PVC Schedule 40 fittings on a chilled water system in a commercial building?
Chilled water is one of the named applications for the 4603 PVC adapter, alongside irrigation, pool and spa and potable water, and it is rated for commercial and residential plumbing as well as irrigation. The constraint that decides it is temperature: 140 degrees F maximum, and no gases. Chilled water sits far below that. The heating side of the same building does not.
9) Will PVC fittings corrode in a pool equipment room or a fertigation line?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why the 4603 adapter holds up in pool and spa equipment rooms and chemically aggressive irrigation lines where a brass or steel adapter pits out. The compound is ASTM D1784 cell class 12454 rigid PVC. It is also UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. The limits are heat, at 140 degrees F, and gas service, which it is not rated for at all.
10) Will a Nibco 4603 adapter match the white PVC already in my building?
The 4603 is white PVC, the standard color for Schedule 40 pressure fittings, so it blends into an existing white Schedule 40 run. If the pipe on your job is gray, that is usually Schedule 80 or electrical conduit and a different fitting family. Color is the quickest field check before you cut in.
