The PVC Schedule 40 90-degree elbow is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L06445Y – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does slip x FIPT mean on the Nibco 4607-3 PVC elbow?
One end is a slip socket that solvent cements over the outside of PVC pipe, the other is female NPT thread. The Nibco 4607-3 is listed as S x F (NPT), so it's the fitting you use where a glued PVC run has to pick up a threaded component, a valve, a hose bibb, a sprinkler riser or a pump nipple. Wrap the male thread with tape or use a thread sealant rated for plastic, and hand tighten plus a turn or two. Do not overtighten a threaded PVC socket.
2) Will a Nibco Schedule 40 PVC elbow glue onto Schedule 80 pipe?
Yes. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC share the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so a Sch 40 socket fits Sch 80 pipe of the same size. The wall is thinner, so the fitting, not the pipe, sets the pressure limit on that joint. The 4607-3 is a Schedule 40 fitting made to ASTM D2466, the socket-type Sch 40 PVC fitting standard.
3) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4607-3 PVC 90 elbow come in, including reducing sizes?
Straight sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Reducing combinations are 1/2 x 3/4, 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2 and 1-1/2 x 1 inch. On a reducing elbow the first size is the slip socket and the second is the female thread, so a 1 x 1/2 turns a 1 inch glued line into a 1/2 inch threaded takeoff without a separate bushing.
4) Can I use a PVC Schedule 40 elbow on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature on this PVC fitting is 140 degrees F, which rules out domestic hot water, boiler loops and hot process lines. Its uses are cold water pressure systems: irrigation, pool and spa, potable cold water and chilled water. For hot water, specify CPVC or metal instead.
5) Can PVC Schedule 40 fittings be used on compressed air?
No, and this matters. The instructions state plainly: do not test or use with compressed air or other gases. PVC fails brittle under stored gas energy. Use it for liquid service only, and pressure test with water, never air.
6) Should I use a slip x FIPT elbow or a slip x slip elbow on an irrigation manifold?
Use slip x slip anywhere the run continues in glued PVC, it is the cheaper joint and there is nothing to leak at a thread. Reach for the slip x FIPT version, like the 4607-3, only where the elbow has to terminate at a threaded item: a valve, a riser, a gauge, a swing joint nipple. Putting a threaded socket in the middle of a glued run adds a failure point for no benefit. On a manifold that usually means slip x slip through the body and slip x FIPT at each valve takeoff.
7) Is this PVC elbow rated for buried and outdoor irrigation use, and will it corrode?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up in buried irrigation and pool lines where metal fittings fail. System use covers commercial plumbing, irrigation and residential plumbing. The one caveat outdoors is sunlight: white PVC left exposed for years degrades from UV, so paint or sleeve anything above grade that will sit in the sun.
8) What do I need besides the fitting to install a Nibco PVC 90 elbow?
For the slip side, PVC primer and PVC solvent cement, plus a clean square cut and deburred pipe end. For the threaded side, PTFE tape or a plastic-safe thread sealant. Nothing is included with the fitting itself. The joining methods for Schedule 40 PVC are solvent cementing or threading, and this elbow uses one of each.
9) Which Nibco part number is the 1 inch slip x FIPT PVC 90 elbow?
Nibco lists the 1 inch as L06445Y. The other straight sizes are L863850 for 1/2 inch, L864150 for 3/4 inch, L06470YP for 1-1/4 inch, L06535Y for 2 inch, L06540YP for 2-1/2 inch, L065700P for 3 inch and L066050P for 4 inch. Reducers carry their own numbers, for example L06460Y for 1 x 1/2 inch and L864300 for 3/4 x 1/2 inch.
10) Will this white PVC elbow match the DWV fittings already in my building?
Careful here. This is a white Schedule 40 pressure fitting to ASTM D2466, for cold pressurized water. DWV fittings look similar but are drainage patterns not rated for pressure, and they are not interchangeable. If the line holds pressure, use the pressure fitting. If it is a drain, waste or vent line, use DWV.
11) How tight is the turn on a 90 degree PVC elbow versus using two 45s?
The 4607-3 is a 90 degree, quarter bend fitting, so it makes the full turn in one short socket. That is what you want in tight mechanical rooms and against a wall. Two 45s make the same turn over a longer sweep with less turbulence and less pressure loss, which is worth doing on long irrigation mains and pump suction. On short branch runs the difference is not worth the extra joints.
