1) Which end of the Nibco 4704 adapter is threaded and which end glues?
Slip x MIPT. The socket end takes the CPVC pipe and is solvent cemented, and the opposite end is a male NPT thread that screws into a female threaded fitting, valve, or appliance connection. That is the whole point of the part: it takes you from a glued CPVC run to a threaded connection.
2) Can I use a CPVC male adapter on a hot water line?
Yes, up to 180 degrees F maximum service temperature. CPVC handles hot and cold potable water distribution and hot corrosive liquids, which is where it is used instead of PVC. Do not put it on compressed air or any other gas.
3) Is the Nibco 4704 adapter lead free and OK for potable drinking water?
Lead-free, and NSF U.P. Certified for potable water use. It goes into both commercial and residential plumbing systems, so it is the fitting to specify on a domestic water riser or a fixture branch in a multi-family or institutional building.
4) What sizes does the Nibco 4704 CPVC male adapter come in?
Six sizes, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. They are straight size, meaning the socket and the thread match, so a 3/4 inch adapter is 3/4 inch CPVC to 3/4 inch male NPT. If you need to change size at the same time you change to thread, you will need a separate reducing bushing or coupling.
5) How do I join a CPVC male adapter, and can I thread both ends instead of gluing?
The socket side is joined by solvent cement, not by heat fusion and not by a mechanical grip. CPVC fittings are joined by solvent cementing or by threading, so the male NPT side threads into a female port with the appropriate sealant, and the socket side gets cemented to the pipe. Use CPVC solvent cement, not standard PVC cement, and follow Nibco's plastic fittings installation instructions.
6) What is the Nibco part number for a 3/4 inch CPVC male adapter?
Nibco lists the 4704 male adapter by size: M030600 for 1/2 inch, M030950 for 3/4 inch, M031350 for 1 inch, M031700 for 1-1/4 inch, M032000 for 1-1/2 inch and M032300 for 2 inch. All are the same slip x MIPT CPVC-CTS adapter, differing only in size.
7) Can I use a CPVC male adapter to connect to a water heater or a threaded valve?
The male NPT end will thread into any female NPT port, which covers most threaded valves, unions and appliance connections. Watch the temperature at the point of connection: the adapter is limited to 180 degrees F, so it is not the fitting to put directly against a heat source above that. On the pipe side, remember the socket is cut for CPVC CTS pipe only.
8) Will a CPVC male adapter corrode or scale like a brass or steel adapter?
CPVC will not rust, pit, scale or corrode, which is the usual reason it goes in ahead of a metallic adapter on hot corrosive liquids or aggressive water. The tradeoff is the thread: a plastic male thread is more easily overtightened and split than a brass one, so if the connection is going to be broken and remade repeatedly, a metallic transition is the better choice.
9) What color is Nibco CPVC pipe fitting, and will it match my existing CPVC?
The 4704 adapter is tan, which is the standard CPVC-CTS color used for hot and cold water distribution. If the pipe already in the building is tan CPVC in copper tube size, this matches the system. White schedule 40 in the same wall is normally PVC and is a different material and a different diameter.
