The CPVC-CTS coupling features female socket connections and is used to connect two lengths of CPVC-CTS piping. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) has proven to be an excellent material for hot corrosive liquids, hot and cold water distribution, and similar applications above the temperature range of PVC. CPVC will not rust, pit, scale or corrode. CPVC fittings are easy to install and are joined by solvent cementing or threading. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry. Nibco M001450 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What sizes does the Nibco 4701 CPVC coupling come in, and can I use it to step down a pipe size?
Straight sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Two reducing versions are made as well: 3/4 x 1/2 inch (MPN M001300) and 1 x 3/4 inch (MPN M001500). So yes, you can reduce one size at a coupling without adding a bushing, but only at those two steps. Anything else, run the full size coupling and reduce elsewhere.
2) Can I run hot water through a Nibco 4701 CPVC coupling?
Yes, that is what CPVC is for. Maximum service temperature is 180 degrees F, which covers domestic hot water distribution and hot corrosive liquids above what PVC will take. The material will not rust, pit, scale or corrode. Do not use it on compressed air or other gases.
3) Do I need to thread or glue the Nibco 4701 coupling, and what do I need on the truck to install it?
Solvent weld only on this one, both ends are slip sockets, so there are no threads to cut or tape. You need CPVC solvent cement and primer per the manufacturer instructions, plus a square cut and a deburred pipe end. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering cement type and cure time; follow those rather than PVC habits, CPVC uses its own cement.
4) Should I use a CPVC slip coupling or a transition fitting to tie into copper?
A slip x slip coupling like the 4701 joins CPVC to CPVC and nothing else, both ends are female solvent weld sockets. To land on copper or steel you need a transition fitting with a threaded or union end. Note that CTS in the name refers to the pipe sizing convention matching copper tube dimensions, it does not mean the fitting mates to copper tube.
5) My building already has tan CPVC water lines. Will the Nibco 4701 match what is there?
Tan CPVC CTS is the standard hot and cold potable water pipe in North American residential and light commercial buildings, and the 4701 is tan CPVC CTS. If your existing lines are tan and sized by copper tube size, this coupling drops into that system. If the pipe on your walls is cream or gray schedule 80, that is a different sizing family and this will not seat.
6) Can I use a CPVC coupling on a compressed air line in my shop?
No. The 4701 CPVC coupling is not for use with compressed air or other gases. Plastic pressure piping on compressed air is a rupture hazard. Keep it to hot and cold water distribution and similar liquid service under 180 degrees F.
7) What is the Nibco part number for a 1 inch CPVC coupling?
For the 4701 series, the 1 inch straight coupling is MPN M001450. Other common calls: 1/2 inch is M001100, 3/4 inch is M001250, 1-1/4 inch is M001700, 1-1/2 inch is M002000 and 2 inch is M002350. Distributors ordering by number should use those, the 4701 designation alone does not identify a size.
