1) Does this CPVC elbow thread on, or does it have to be solvent cemented?
Both ends are slip sockets (S x S), joined by solvent cement. There are no threads on the 4706. You will need CPVC primer/cement rated for the material, and the pipe ends cut square and deburred before the socket goes on.
2) What is the maximum temperature this CPVC elbow can handle, and can I use it on a compressed air line?
Maximum service temperature is 180 degrees F, which covers domestic hot water distribution. It must not be used with compressed air or other gases. CPVC is chosen over PVC precisely because it handles hot water and hot corrosive liquids above PVC's range, and it will not rust, pit, scale or corrode.
3) Is the Nibco 4706 elbow acceptable for potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The 4706 CPVC elbow is NSF U.P. certified and lead-free, and it is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing use. That is the combination most institutional and multi-family potable water specs call for.
4) What sizes does the Nibco 4706 CPVC 45-degree elbow come in?
Six CTS sizes: 1/2 inch (M042800), 3/4 inch (M042900), 1 inch (M043000), 1-1/4 inch (M043100), 1-1/2 inch (M043200) and 2 inch (M043300). All are straight size, meaning both sockets are the same diameter, so if you need to change size at the bend you will have to add a reducer bushing or coupling.
5) Can I use a 45-degree CPVC elbow instead of two 90s to route around an obstruction?
That is exactly what it is for. The 4706 turns the line 45 degrees (a 1/8 bend), so a pair of them offsets a run around a beam or duct with far less pressure drop than two 90-degree elbows. Use a 90 where you need a hard turn at a wall or riser; use the 45 for offsets and gradual direction changes.
6) I have tan CPVC pipe in the building already. Will this elbow match what is installed?
Tan is the standard color for CPVC CTS hot and cold water systems, and the 4706 is tan, so it matches the existing tan CPVC tubing and fittings on the job. Confirm the pipe is CTS rather than IPS by checking the printed markings on the pipe wall before ordering.
