The CPVC-CTS 90-degree elbow features female socket connections and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) has proven to be an excellent material for hot corrosive liquids, hot and cold water distribution, and similar applications above the temperature range of PVC. CPVC will not rust, pit, scale or corrode. CPVC fittings are easy to install and are joined by solvent cementing or threading. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry. Nibco M055750 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Nibco 4707 CPVC elbow fit copper pipe or PVC pipe?
Neither. The 4707 elbow is made for CPVC CTS (copper tube size) pipe, which is dimensionally different from PVC schedule pipe and from copper tube itself. It joins by solvent cementing into a female socket on both ends, so it only mates with CPVC CTS pipe of the matching size. Trying to cement it onto PVC pipe, or slip it over copper, won't give you a joint you can trust.
2) Can I use a CPVC 4707 elbow on a hot water line?
Yes. CPVC is rated for hot and cold water distribution and this fitting carries a maximum service temperature of 180 degrees F. That covers normal domestic hot water. What it is not for is compressed air or other gases, on any line, at any pressure.
3) Is the Nibco 4707 CPVC elbow lead-free and approved for potable water?
The 4707 is a lead-free fitting and is NSF U.P. certified, which is the potable water listing plumbing inspectors look for on drinking water systems. That is what lets it go into occupied residential and commercial water distribution rather than being limited to non-potable service.
4) What sizes does the Nibco 4707 90-degree CPVC elbow come in?
Seven options: 1/2 inch (M055450), 3/4 inch (M055600), 1 inch (M055750), 1-1/4 inch (M055950), 1-1/2 inch (M056150), and 2 inch (M056400), plus one reducing configuration at 3/4 x 1/2 inch (M055650). All are slip x slip CTS sockets. If you need to drop from a 3/4 inch branch to a 1/2 inch fixture run and turn the corner at the same time, the 3/4 x 1/2 saves you a separate bushing.
5) Do I need to thread this elbow or glue it?
Glue it. Both ends of the 4707 are solvent weld sockets, so the pipe slides in and the joint is made with CPVC solvent cement. There are no threads on this fitting, so you'll need CPVC cement (and primer if your jurisdiction requires it) on hand before the fitting goes in. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the cementing procedure.
6) Should I use CPVC instead of copper for a hot water repipe in an apartment building?
CPVC is worth a look where corrosion is the reason you are repiping. It will not rust, pit, scale or corrode, and it handles hot corrosive liquids above the range PVC can take. For a property manager standardizing across units, the practical draw is that it goes together with solvent cement instead of torch work, so there is no hot work permit and no open flame in an occupied unit. The 4707 is approved for both commercial and residential plumbing, so the same fitting covers a mixed portfolio.
7) I have a 3/4 inch CPVC main and need to turn and reduce to 1/2 inch. What fitting do I order?
Order the 3/4 x 1/2 inch reducing elbow, MPN M055650. It takes the 3/4 inch line into the larger socket and lands a 1/2 inch CTS stub off the turn, so you do not stack a reducer bushing behind a straight 3/4 elbow. Both ends are still solvent weld sockets.
8) Why is this CPVC fitting tan instead of white?
Tan is the color code for CPVC. White generally means PVC, which is a lower temperature material. On a job where both are on the truck, the tan tells you at a glance the 4707 is the hot water rated fitting. Color is not a spec difference on this part, it is an identification convention.
9) What is the difference between a 1/4 bend and a 90-degree elbow in CPVC?
Same thing, two names. The 4707 is a 90 degree elbow, also written as a 1/4 bend, meaning it turns the run a quarter of a full circle. Drawings and DWV-trained plumbers tend to say 1/4 bend, supply houses say 90. If a spec calls for either term at a CTS size, this is the fitting.
