1) Will the Nibco 4770 CPVC ball valve work on CPVC hot water lines, or is it cold water only?
Hot and cold both, within limits. The 4770 CPVC ball valve is rated 150 psi non-shock cold working pressure at 73F, and its maximum service temperature is 180F at 45 psi. That drop is the part people miss: as the line temperature climbs toward 180F, the allowable pressure falls to 45 psi. CPVC itself handles hot corrosive liquids and hot and cold water distribution above the range PVC can take, and it will not rust, pit, scale or corrode.
2) What does slip x slip mean on a Nibco 4770 valve, and do I need glue or threads?
Slip x slip means female socket on both ends, so the valve solvent cements onto the pipe. There are no threads and no union nuts to make up. Both ends are socket per ASTM D2486, and CPVC fittings join by solvent cementing. Order CPVC solvent cement and primer separately; neither ships with the valve. Once it is cemented in, it is a permanent joint, so if you want to be able to pull the valve out later, use a true union valve or cement short CPVC nipples in and put unions either side.
3) Is the Nibco 4770 CPVC ball valve approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The 4770 carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 for drinking water system components and NSF/ANSI/CAN-372 for lead content, and it is listed as a lead-free application. Those are the two certifications a facilities or institutional buyer needs to see on a potable line, and they are what let this valve go into domestic water in a school, hospital or multi-family building.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4770 CPVC ball valve come in?
Six sizes, 1/2 inch through 2 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. That is the full run. These are CTS sizes, so the socket is sized to CPVC copper tube size pipe, which is what a residential and light commercial hot and cold water system is typically run in. Above 2 inch you are out of this valve's range.
5) Will refrigerant oil or a chemical near the line damage a CPVC ball valve?
It can, and Nibco publishes a specific warning about it. POE (polyol ester) refrigerant oils are incompatible with CPVC and other plastics, and Nibco documents that hazard in its POE Warning on plastics incompatibility. So on a mechanical room job where CPVC domestic water runs alongside refrigerant piping, keep POE oil off the plastic, no wiping down CPVC with a rag that has been in it. CPVC does handle hot corrosive liquids generally, but chemical compatibility is per fluid, not blanket.
6) Can I install a Nibco 4770 CPVC valve in a commercial building, or is it residential grade only?
Both. The 4770 is listed for commercial plumbing and residential plumbing, and the NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and 372 listings are what a spec on a commercial domestic water job normally calls for. For a property manager standardizing across a portfolio, the 1/2 through 2 inch range covers fixture branches up through small risers with one valve family and one solvent cement.
