The CPVC-CTS cap features a female socket connection to fit over the end of a pipe to create a seal. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) has proven to be an excellent material for hot corrosive liquids, hot and cold water distribution, and similar applications above the temperature range of PVC. CPVC will not rust, pit, scale or corrode. CPVC fittings are easy to install and are joined by solvent cementing or threading. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry. FlowGuard Gold® is a registered trademark of The Lubrizol Corporation.

Nibco M172750 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size CPVC pipe does the Nibco 4717 cap fit?
The Nibco 4717 cap is made for CPVC CTS (copper tube size) pipe and comes in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Order by the nominal pipe size you are capping. CTS sizing matters here: CPVC CTS pipe and Schedule 40 CPVC of the same nominal call-out are not the same outside diameter, so a CTS cap won't seat correctly on schedule-sized pipe.
2) Does the Nibco 4717 CPVC cap glue on or thread on?
Solvent weld only. The 4717 is a slip (S socket) cap, so it slides over the pipe end and is cemented with CPVC solvent cement. There are no threads on it, so if you need a removable cap for future access, you want a threaded FIPT cap over a male adapter instead of this one.
3) Is the Nibco 4717 CPVC cap approved for potable drinking water?
It is NSF U.P. certified and carries NSF/ANSI listing, and it is a lead-free application fitting, which is what an inspector looks for on potable water. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
4) Can I cap off a compressed air line with a CPVC cap?
No. The 4717 cap is not for use with compressed air or other gases, and that restriction is absolute regardless of the pressure. It is a water-system fitting. Cap a compressed air line with metal.
5) Can I use a CPVC cap on a hot water line?
Yes. The 4717 cap is CPVC, rated to a maximum service temperature of 180 degrees F, which is what puts it on hot water distribution where PVC can't go. It won't rust, pit, scale or corrode, so it holds up on domestic hot as well as cold.
6) What do I need besides the cap to dead-end a CPVC branch?
Just CPVC solvent cement and, per the manufacturer's instructions, the primer/cleaner their procedure calls for. The 4717 cap ships as the fitting alone, no gasket and no hardware, because the joint is chemically welded. Cut the pipe square, deburr, and follow Nibco's plastic fittings installation instructions for cure time before you pressurize.
7) Nibco 4717 vs a test cap for pressure testing a CPVC riser?
The 4717 is a permanent cap. Once it is solvent welded on, the only way off is to cut the pipe, so use it where the branch is being abandoned or left for a future tie-in you are willing to cut into. For a test that you intend to reopen, a mechanical or threaded arrangement makes more sense than gluing this on and sawing it off.
8) What is the Nibco part number for a 3/4 inch CPVC slip cap?
M172700 is the 3/4 inch. The rest of the 4717 run: M172650 for 1/2 inch, M172750 for 1 inch, M172800 for 1-1/4 inch, M172850 for 1-1/2 inch and M172900 for 2 inch. Useful if you are standardizing a fitting kit across a property and want to order by part number rather than description.
