1) What does the Nibco 4701-T transition coupling actually transition between?
It joins IPS (iron pipe size) CPVC to CTS (copper tube size) CPVC. Both ends are solvent weld sockets: spigot IPS on one side, socket CTS on the other. That is the fitting you need when a schedule IPS-sized CPVC line has to tie into CTS CPVC water distribution piping, since the two sizing systems have different outside diameters and will not slip into each other's sockets.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 4701-T CPVC transition coupling come in?
Three sizes: 3/4 inch (MPN M001260), 1 inch (M001400), and 2 inch (M002360). Size refers to the nominal pipe size on both ends, so a 1 inch coupling takes 1 inch IPS CPVC on one side and 1 inch CTS CPVC on the other. It is a straight-size transition, not a reducing fitting.
3) Can I use this CPVC coupling on a hot water line?
Yes, within limits. Maximum service temperature is 180 degrees F, which covers domestic hot and cold water distribution. CPVC is used above the temperature range where PVC stops being suitable, and it won't rust, pit, scale or corrode. Keep the system at or below 180 F at the fitting.
4) Can I run compressed air through this CPVC fitting?
No. The 4701-T is not for use with compressed air or other gases. That restriction applies to the CPVC fitting regardless of size. Use piping and fittings rated for compressed air service instead.
5) Is the Nibco 4701-T coupling OK for potable water in a commercial building?
It is a lead-free fitting, NSF U.P. certified, and rated for both commercial and residential plumbing systems. That is the combination a facilities or institutional buyer is usually checking on domestic water work.
6) Can I use this coupling to connect CPVC to copper tubing?
No. Despite the CTS name, both ends are CPVC solvent weld sockets. CTS here means copper tube sizing of the CPVC pipe, not actual copper. To go from CPVC to copper you need a threaded or press transition, not this solvent weld coupling.
7) Is the 4701-T coupling threaded or does it get solvent cemented?
Solvent weld only, both ends. There are no threads on this coupling, so it gets prepped and cemented with CPVC solvent cement. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the joining procedure.
8) Will this tan Nibco coupling match my existing CPVC water lines?
The 4701-T is tan, which is the color convention used on CPVC CTS hot and cold water distribution piping (as opposed to the gray used on CPVC schedule industrial pipe). If your building's CPVC domestic water is tan CTS, this fitting is the matching family.
