Nibco CB10200 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco 5117-3 CPVC cap thread onto a male pipe end, or does it glue on?
It threads. The 5117-3 is a female NPT (FPT) cap, so it screws onto a male threaded pipe end or a male adapter. There is no socket for solvent cement on this fitting. If your run is plain-end CPVC pipe, you'd either add a male adapter first or use a socket-type cap instead.
2) Can I use this CPVC cap on a potable water line?
Yes. The Corzan CPVC thread cap is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, which are the potable-water material and health-effects standards. It also meets ASTM F439 for Schedule 80 CPVC socket-type fittings.
3) How hot can this CPVC Schedule 80 cap run?
Maximum service temperature is 210 degrees F. That is what makes CPVC the choice over PVC on hot water and heated process lines. Keep in mind pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so a line at the top of that range should be derated per the Chemtrol technical data.
4) Is it safe to pressure test a capped CPVC line with air?
No. Do not use or test this fitting with compressed air or other gases. Thermoplastic systems are hydrostatically tested with water only. Capping a line and blowing it out with shop air is exactly the scenario the manufacturer warns against.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco Corzan CPVC threaded cap come in?
Ten sizes: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. Part numbers run CB10050 for the 1/4 inch up through CB10500 for the 4 inch. Size is nominal pipe size, so a 2 inch cap threads onto 2 inch NPT.
6) Will a Schedule 80 CPVC threaded cap work on Schedule 40 pipe?
Yes, as long as the pipe end is threaded NPT. NPT thread dimensions are the same regardless of pipe schedule, so a Sch 80 CPVC cap will thread onto a Sch 40 male end of the same nominal size. The catch is that Sch 40 CPVC has thinner walls and is generally not threaded for pressure service, so the joint will only be as good as the pipe it's cut into. The heavier Sch 80 wall on this cap is what carries the thread.
7) Is CPVC the right material here, or should I be looking at PVC?
Pick CPVC when the line runs hot. Corzan CPVC carries a 210 degree F maximum service temperature and holds mechanical strength across a broad temperature range, where standard PVC is limited to much cooler service. If your line is cold water or drainage only, PVC Sch 80 does the same job. For chemical service, check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide against your media before committing to either.
8) What color is this cap, and will it match my existing CPVC piping?
Light grey, which is the standard Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 color. It will match grey Sch 80 CPVC industrial pipe and fittings. It will not match the tan or cream CTS CPVC used on residential hot and cold water lines, and that tan material is a different sizing system entirely, not IPS.
9) Where would a maintenance crew actually use this threaded CPVC cap?
Commercial plumbing, industrial process lines and irrigation are the stated uses. Typical jobs are capping a future branch or stub-out, dead-ending a header, or closing off a test or drain port. Because it threads rather than glues, it comes back off, which is why it suits points you expect to reopen. CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, so a capped stub can sit for years and still break loose.
